Pirates take league lead from Elks

LEADWOOD — Brad Merseal pitched an impressive four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts, and the Leadwood Pirates seized first place in the MABA Senior Babe Ruth standings on Tuesday by defeating the Potosi Elks 2-0.

Ryan Calvird blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning, as the Pirates (7-2) pulled even with the Elks (5-2) in the loss column. The teams will meet again next Tuesday in Potosi.

Devin Hampton allowed only four hits and fanned six in the complete-game loss for the Elks, who were paced offensively by Brad Eaton with two singles.

Leadwood grabbed the lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Trevor Kean. Travis Brotherton and Michael Harp also singled in the victory.

Hounds 19, Wildcats 1

CALEDONIA
— Jake Rhodes had a remarkable 6-for-6 performance with five RBI, and Dante Castro allowed no hits on the mound Tuesday night as the Farmington Hounds beat the Caledonia Wildcats 19-1.

Houston Comfort and Castro each collected a two-run single, and Travis Wade singled twice with two RBI for the Hounds (11-2), who exploded for 12 runs in the seventh inning.

Jared Dunlap went 2-for-2 and Sam Thompson added a RBI triple in the victory. Blake Archer, Rider Garrett and Jimmy Moore chipped in singles.

The Wildcats scored their lone run on three walks and an error in the fourth.
