ST. LOUIS (AP) — On the day the St. Louis Cardinals signed a top Latin American prospect, they remained far apart in negotiations with top draft pick Shelby Miller.
General manager John Mozeliak noted only about a third of the first-rounders had signed from last month’s draft.
Miller is a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Brownwood, Texas. He was considered one of the top high school pitchers in the draft and was the 19th overall selection.
Mozeliak said negotiations with 16-year-old outfielder Wagner Mateo of the Dominican Republic did not slow down talks with Miller.
