BISMARCK — The Potosi Pumas compiled 15 hits to defeat the Bismarck Tigers 12-5 on Monday to maintain a .033 percentage point lead over the Leadwood Rockies in the National Division of the Junior Babe Ruth League, even though the Rockies hold a half-game lead.

The Tigers (8-7) held their own for the first two innings before the Pumas began to score at a 3-1 pace with timely hitting being the difference.

Bismarck pitcher Jake Swain got the first two batters to ground out back to him, but a double by Matt McCoy was followed by an RBI infield-single off the bat of Jeremy Malugen.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, but could only collect one run on a ground ball hit by Logan Blunt. Bismarck loaded the sacks again in the second, but came away empty-handed as Potosi’s starting pitcher Jacob Middleton struck out the last batter to end the inning.

Kyle Ramsey and Malugen both hit RBI-singles to spearhead a three-run third for Potosi, and an RBI single by Eric McCoy and a two-run double by Matt McCoy gave the Pumas a three-run fourth as well. Both rallies started with a batter being hit by a pitch.

Leading off the third and fourth innings for the Tigers, Jake Swain drew his second and third walks of the game and eventually scored both times. Tyler Pearl hit a two-out single in the fourth to plate Swain and also Jacob Kirkpatrick who had reached base after being hit by a pitch.

With their overpacked schedule this week, the Pumas opted to utilize four pitchers in the game, pitching no more than two innings each. Malugen picked up the win, allowing only one hit and no runs in his two innings of work.

Brendan McCoy came off the benchto catch in the fourth inning and he was 2-2 in the game with a walk. Potosi scored two runs in the top of the seventh on four singles and a walk before relief pitcher Shane Horn shut down the rally.

The Pumas have four games still to be made up this week with the Rockies being one of the four.
