Wilkinson travels country to share an American tradition

FARMINGTON — With an ear shattering and chest piercing boom, 100 pounds of solid steel soared straight up 100 feet into the sky, leaving behind clouds of white smoke that rolled across the field.

Gay Wilkinson grinned and waited for the inevitable thud as one of his forged anvils returned to earth.

"Did you hear it ring?" he asked.

Shooting anvils is one of Wilkinson's favorite things to do. He frequently demonstrates the old-time communications method at Rendezvous and other events.

One might even say anvils have taken over the former Farmington mayor's life. Anvils from as far back as the 1700s are lined up along the back of a long bench in his workshop and smaller ones are scattered throughout the garage. Glass anvils, hand-carved wooden anvils and some made from soap fill a curio cabinet in his living room. He made most of them. One year, he made a total of 500 model anvils from a variety of materials.

“I wake up some mornings, and I just feel like making anvils,” he explained with a smile.

A black Styrofoam anvil on the roof makes it look as though Wilkinson's aim was off and a real anvil crashed into the house where he and his wife, “Cookie,” live. There are large versions of traditional style anvils in the backyard and one that resembles a three-foot high cone.

But Wilkinson's most treasured anvil appears to be a 432-pound forged steel specimen that he wants to use as his grave marker.

Anvils are the tools blacksmiths use to pound metal into shape. The anvil itself is forged and pounded into shape to last hundreds of years. No two are exactly alike, Wilkinson said. Because they are just tools, people did not make a point to keep records or write about anvils through the years, he added.

Wilkinson began his hobby in 1983 after he heard Ed Trokey and a friend talking about “ringing the anvil.”

He asked the man what that phrase meant and it ignited a fascination with the blacksmith’s tool that grew the more he learned.

Where one person might see a heavy lump of steel with one pointed end and one squared off end, Wilkinson sees a base, body, throat, waist, face, shoulder, horn and heel.

Numbers across the side of an anvil tell him how much it weighs in “stones” and he can convert that to pounds.

He can tell by looking if the anvil was made in the United States or Europe, how it was made, and in what century it was created. He can also tell if it will “fly” well.

Shooting anvils is a centuries old tradition, according to “Anvils in America” by Richard A. Postman. The tradition is thought to have developed from an ancient ceremony honoring St. Clement, who is one of the patron saints of blacksmiths. Clement lived in the 1st century, before gunpowder was invented, according to Postman.

By the 1800s, towns that did not have a cannon or church bells often shot anvils as an early warning system about an emergency, to announce a gathering or to celebrate holidays such as Fourth of July or Christmas. Justices of the Peace would “forge” marriages with an anvil shoot, Davy Crockett’s friends celebrated his election to Congress by shooting an anvil, and telephone service to Deadwood, South Dakota was acknowledged by a 39-anvil salute.

To shoot an anvil, two of the same size are needed. One is turned upside down on the ground, and the bottom cavity is filled with gunpowder. The shooter puts a second anvil right side up on the bottom anvil so the cavities match up. After putting a fuse between the anvils, and applying a sealant to keep the two anvils stuck together, the shooter lights a fuse and steps back to watch the anvils blow apart.

Wilkinson uses peanut better to seal the anvils together and to ensure that the force of the exploding gases from the black powder pushes upward instead of escaping sideways. He looks for a level piece of ground to place the anvils so the top one will return from the air close to the bottom one.

The explosion is as loud as a cannon, and can be heard up to 15 miles away. Fans of the hobby like to stand close enough to hear the anvil ring as it flies through the air without being so close they are in danger of being hit as the anvil falls back down.

Wilkinson bought his first anvil in 1995 from an 89-year-old man who showed him a video of the process. The man gave Wilkinson, who then was mayor of Farmington, some advice.

“He had such an unbelievable way of looking at things,” Wilkinson said. “He told me, ‘Don’t cheapen it by just showing it. Tell them about blacksmiths’ roles in our country and how the anvil is like our freedom.’”

Two weeks later the man died.

“It was like he handed it off to someone who cared as much about it, then he died,” Wilkinson mused.

Soon after, Wilkinson found another anvil and headed to a large farm in Moberly for his maiden attempt at shooting an anvil. Looking back, he stood dangerously close to the display and felt the concussion.

“The anvil takes off really fast and goes straight up until gravity takes over,” he said. “Then it comes straight down and most of the time, it sinks into the ground so far you have to pull it out with chains and a truck.”

Wilkinson travels all over to shoot anvils, sometimes shooting two or three per day. He competed for six years in the World Champion Anvil Shooting Championship in Mississippi, a U.S. competition to which everyone is welcome.

He won his competition in 2000 with a shot that reached 224 feet in height. Points are added for each foot the anvil travels upward, and three points are taken away for each foot away from the bottom anvil to the point where the top anvil lands.

There are two types of competition at the World Championship event. One is the traditional method that Wilkinson uses, where the flying anvil is 100 pounds and only one pound of black powder may be used. The other involves a modified cannon barrel base with several pounds of black powder that sends the anvil nearly 500 feet into the air.

“There are a lot of factors that affect how high the anvil goes, including how solid the ground is, the base plate you shoot off, the day’s temperature and humidity,” Wilkinson said. “The prize is a little trophy with a brass anvil on it. We don’t do this for money or trophies, we do it for fun.”

It's amazing how an action today is called treasonist, but a couple hundred years ago was called being a patriot. Riverrat, scary but you're more right than many give you credit for. Others just like more sugar with their truth.

ohh the sheeple, they make me laugh, even in these dark times. PoliSci, in the very near future you and countless other ppl will be waking up to this, and just like everyone who wakes up, including myself, will go through a real rough period of time when you come to realize everything you have been taught and know is nothing but lies. patriots around the country are getting geared up and ready for combat, even more than before due to obama declaring the h1n1 a national emergency under Presidential Directive 51 (NSPD - 51), and National Emergencies Act (1976, 2007 ) (50 USC 1601-1651). under these he has just made himself a dictator! Their next move will be martial law, which is when i believe the 2nd American Revolution will begin. the internet is a great networking tool, it is essentially today's Paul Revere, allowing us to get the information out at light speed. We are all on standby, locked and loaded, waiting for the first shot to be fired. This has been brewing for a long time now, Ive seen it coming for years. This is history in the making.

and really, the healthcare reform being a "progressive idea"? lmao. it appears you obviously didnt take the time to read the bill, too busy watching football and playing videogames perhaps?
PoliSci posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Riverrat has obviously lost the plot. We wonder why we can't get progressive ideas through to this country, such as healthcare reform, and right here we have a prime example. Myself, I don't feel the need for said vaccinations, but for those with their tinfoil hats on thinking everything is a conspiracy to take your guns and your religion, your being churlish. Talking about your cases of ammo, your body armor, and your "cold dead hands" lumps you into a category with the "Birthers" & the "9/11" nutters. If you want to be taken seriously, with any credibility, I'd suggest you tone down the crazy a bit.

well theres the emergency theyve been waiting for. late last night U.S. President Barack Obama has signed a proclamation declaring 2009 H1N1 swine flu a national emergency. this paves the way for matrial law, fema camps, and federalisation of local police departments. remember KATRINA, that was a national emergancy too, as they went door to door confiscating guns and suspending any right you had as a human being. this is an attack on those who are awake! Im taking a defensive standpoint on this at this time, and am just going to continue to gather supplies and reserve myself until they come to my door for now. hopefully it takes awhile for it to filter down to us from the larger cities. I urge ppl to do the same. If they think the swineflu is dangerous, wait till they see how dangerous high speed lead poisoning is, and how effective steelcore ammo is against bodyarmor. as far as the vaccine, i wasnt reffering to the ones you get when your a baby, even though ppl should have a choice of what chemicals go in their childs body. i was reffering to the h1n1 vaccine, which contains thimerosal, a mercury based preservative that is directly linked to autism; squalene, a type of oil adjuvant that has been proven to be linked to many illnesses including cancer, gwi, and cell mutation. not to metion that squalene was banned in 1994 for use in humans; Polysorbate 80, which is known to cause sterilization and misscarage. real good stuff for ppl, let me tell ya. America may still have more freedom that some countrys, but for how long at the rate weve been losing them after 911? as for a laxed gun control, there should be no gun control at all. "the right of the ppl to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". I consider ANY law resrticting firearms an infringment, bc if you know history, the 2nd amendmet is there soley to give the ppl a means to combat the govt if they feel it has become oppressive.

I remember watching Gaye Wilkson shooting his anvils when he first got started. The force even standing aways from it is amazing. How that thing lands so close to the other is pretty cool to watch.

And as far as me being a conspiracy theorist, i guess you could say that, but im definitely not your average one. i don't care if the govt knows who i am, or anyone for that matter. there's no point in trying to hide that, big brother knows who i am anyway. Im sure they've taken notice each time ive ordered 3 or 4 cases of ammo at a time online, and im sure a lot of the independent news sites i visit are govt watched too. its not a big deal to me. the only difference between ppl like me and ppl like them is they have a little piece of metal called a badge. big deal, the badge doesn't scare or intimidate me a bit. I cower to no man. im just the same as them, their always armed, so am i. they are well trained, so am i. if they and i both take off the body armor, bullets will rip through us the same, we both bleed red, we both are human. i have never understood why ppl are intimidated by the badge and uniform of another human.

Battlefield? There have been protests and that is it. If the world goes over because militants overthrow the government then I will come running to you. As for the rx 84 and h.r. 645, h.r. 645 does not affect the ability of the government to respond to emergencies, it is only requiring (by my interpretation) military to make plans for housing refugees in a major disaster. The RX 84 only comes into effect when extreme disasters occur. Forcibly vaccinate? Do you mean requiring us to protect ourselves and our children from deadly diseases? Oh the horror. Now we won't be able to let our children die of disfiguring and excruciatingly painful diseases like polio or rubella. Maybe the bailouts weren't the best thing, however that does not a dictatorship make. America is not a battlefield nor is it going to be in the next fifty years. We have many freedoms that other countries don't. We have more lax gun control than any country in Europe except maybe Switzerland. We have freedom of speech and vote for our leaders. By the way, should you be posting this stuff if you're a conspiracy theorist? Your ip address is recorded.

Think about it!
riverrat420 posted at Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 3:27 pm

what do you make of the 1000s of presidental executive orders that effectively dismantle and suspend the constitution and bill of rights, and that make the president an instant dictator? what do you think about the admitted training of foriegn troops in America to help with "civil unrest" and the passing of legislation to forcefully vaccinate, illegaly arrest and quarentine(detain) citizens without warrant? I wonder, what goes through your mind when you think about the millions who are homeless and in the streets due to the elite bankers robbing the treasury right in the open and no one does anthing about it? I wonder, have you read the 1000+ page healthcarebill and understood what it really says?what about the illegal and proposterous cap and trade? I could go on and on with 100s of post listing the many other faces of tyranny and oppession that We The People face today, and yes its deffinatly real, The real question i have for you, sir, is what side of history are you on? because, very soon, when America becomes the battlefield that we all know its rapidly heading twards, i want to know my allies and my enemies.

never once did i say that i didnt like this man and never once did i say that him shooting the anvils isnt cool. i LOVE explosions, pyrotechnics, and most other incendiary devices. of course, when discussing any controversial issues, there will always be those who want to argue with those who are awake and trying to awake other sheeple, most of the time either due to their own inability to to see whats right in front of them, or due to that fact that the actually like being slaves to the elite. yes, as sad as it is, there are alot of ppl who actually see the tyranny and opression that we face in America today, but dont care, bc they love it, they love the abuse and submit without question. i wonder, which do you fall under, KomradKlaus? you seem to be quite misinformed, believing that gtmo is closed and that obama has stopped the torture of detainees bc the controlled media says so? what about the 800+ fema detainment camps that everyone tried to debunk, but couldnt? what about the REX-84 program and h.r.645?
KomradKlaus posted at Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 6:29 pm

What is wrong with you? He launches anvils and that is cool. Why would you throw politics / treasonous rants- into it. You don't have to like him but you just made yourself look like and idiot. Our founding fathers were fighting actual oppression not gay rights and healthcare bills. What about Gitmo? Wasn't that an internment cap? Didn't our president shut down that INTERNMENT camp. Didn't Bush first sign the patriot act into law. As for bilderberg, I'm sure one meeting once a year is enough to create puppet rulers and conspire to destroy us. Suppose this bilderberg group did put every president into office for three quarters of a century, how in hell did they let Kennedy get through. Did they decide to take a break? Keep your ludicrous, treasonous, self centered, uninformed, and UNPATRIOTIC comments to yourself.

being a militant and a defender of feedom and of the constitution is the ultimate show of patriotism, and its something i enjoy doing, just like this fellow like to send anvils skyhigh. Plus, if you think about it, its what this great nation was founded on. Govt fearing, well armed, radical militiamen are what started this country and id bet that if the founding fathers were to see how the nation the faught so hard to build has ended up, theyd be outraged and be calling for revolution too. ppl need to wake up and reconise tyranny when its staring them in the face
riverrat420 posted at Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

correction. obama, just like every other president for the past 70 years with the exception of kennedy, was hand picked and groomed by the bilderberg group, and is essentially nothing more than a figurehead, a tool that the elite use to do their dirty work and pave the way for their ideal "one world govt". so yes, my rant went a lil extreme to attack obama, but in my defense, he is the current scapegoat for most things, due to him being the current president. but my point being, thanks the the corrupt govt's draconian partriot act, and their false flag "war on terror", ppl have to watch what they do with fun things like that. I used to make homemade firecrackers all the time with black powder and gun powder. i know loud booms are fun, but alot of things that were ok pre 9-11 are not ok post 9-11. i get patronized all the time about my gun vids on myspace, due to the fact they are of me rapid and bumpfireing ak's and sks's. im scrutinized for being a militia member by many ppl, but the way i see it

riverrat420: Why must you throw Obama's name into it? Get over it.

this hobby sounds like fun. i think i will try to find a couple of old anvils and start shooting them to the moon. gotta love it
riverrat420 posted at Monday, October 19th, 2009 at 11:41 am

hmmm. better watch out using black powder to shoot the anvils in the air, post 9-11 gestapo will get ya...esp. since the govt considers hydrogen peroxide a "bomb material" now, im sure that if they see you buying black powder and blowing large peices of metal 100 ft in the air, that they will for sure snatch and grab you in the middle of the night, tell your family their not allowed to talk about your dissaperance, slap a islamic name to you instead of your name, and place you in a internment camp (fema death camp) indefinatlely. thank your facist leader, the joker, obama for renewing the patriot act.
