PARK HILLS — The Central School District will have a new Special Olympics team. The school board approved a request to form a team during its board meeting on Monday night. The team will compete in Cape Girardeau this spring.
The request to form a team was made by Shelly Andrews, Amy Jones and Brianna Shelton. Superintendent Dr. Desi Mayberry said Central has never had an official Special Olympics team.
“Several years ago we hosted a competition here and we had some individuals compete,” Mayberry said. “However, we have never had an actual team. I appreciate the initiative Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Shelton and Mrs. Jones have shown in wanting to do this.”
The board also approved a request from Sara Parks to allow the West Elementary Honors Choir to perform at a St. Louis Cardinals’ game during the 2010 season. Mayberry said it’s not known yet which game the choir will perform.
During the reports portion of the board meeting Mayberry talked about enrollment at Central. He said enrollment for the district in September was 2060. In September of 2005 enrollment was 1818.
“Our enrollment has steadily increased,” he said. “We have had five years of consistent growth.”
The district has a $4 million no-tax increase bond issue on the Nov. 3 ballot. The bond issue will finance an 18,000-square-feet addition to Central Elementary. The addition would house seven new classrooms, a set of restrooms and a multi-purpose room.
Central Elementary is out of expansion room, according to district officials. Mayberry said because of increased enrollment and the current bond market the time is right to put a bond issue on the ballot.
