FEMA approves levee
Ste. Genevieve’s big levee has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for another 10 years. FEMA sent Ste. Genevieve Levee District III Chairman Vern Bauman a letter earlier this month. The letter said the levee had been accredited by FEMA and that it offered protection from the baseline 100-year flood event. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave the levee an inspection rating of “acceptable.”
Criteria that was looked at during the inspection included the amount of freeboard on the levee, levee closures, measures to prevent erosion of the levee during flood conditions and expected seepage during flooding.
