Playpower, Inc. revealed Thursday that it will be closing the Farmington manufacturing facility and relocating some of the services to Monett, Mo., by year's end. - Jen Miller / Daily Journal
FARMINGTON — After months of remaining tight-lipped about the possibility and refusing to discuss the matter publicly, Playpower, Inc. revealed Thursday that it will be closing the Farmington manufacturing facility and relocating some of the services to Monett, Mo., by year’s end.

Talk of the shutdown spread earlier in the week when some employees were called together and given the news. City officials say they had been trying to discuss the rumored plant closing with Playpower officials since the first of the year, adding that company spokespeople had become “tight lipped” in recent months.

Then Farmington city officials received a matter-of-fact e-mail message Thursday. In the message it said Playpower, Inc., based in Huntersville, N.C., would “work with all employees to transition them to the Monett facility ‘where feasible’.” The message went on to say, “Those employees who are displaced by this action and who are not transitioned to Monett, we will make every effort to engage local employers and community services to assist with their transition to other employment.”

The release went on to say the move should be done by 2010.

The latest press release referenced the transferring of the rotational molding operation to Monett. That information was speculative about a year ago, and was eventually confirmed by the company after work had begun to expand the Monett facilities. At that time it was announced that about 50 workers in the Farmington operation would be displaced ... with the company to employ about 200 people at it’s growing Playpower Rotomold Center of Excellence in Monett.

“Playpower had previously announced in January 2009 the intent to combine all U.S. based rotational molding processes into a Center of Excellence ... Continuing this strategy to encompass all remaining manufacturing activities allows us to build on our existing manufacturing platform and the investments we have made over the past several years. The plan is to consolidate all other manufacturing processes into a Center of Excellence also in Monett, Missouri.”

Reportedly Playpower had laid off some workers earlier in the year, and then went through another layoff about a month ago.

The company did say in the press release that “Little Tikes Commercial Sales, Marketing, Product Development, and Customer Service will remain located in the Farmington area and all market facing activities remain unchanged. We will continue to market products under the Little Tikes Commercial brand and maintain a dedicated representative network for LTC products and services.”

As of earlier this year, Playpower-Little Tikes employed about 1,000 people world wide.

The local manufacturing facility began as Iron Mountain Forge in 1979 and in 1990 added the first plastic rotational molding machine. The machine made it possible to manufacture one-piece spiral slides.

Rubbermaid acquired Iron Mountain Forge in 1993. Philosophies and mission statements for both companies were very similar. In 1995 Little Tikes Commercial acquired Omni, an indoor play manufacturer to help with the indoor play market.

A Canadian company, Paris Equipment Manufacturing Limited, was also acquired to serve the European and Canadian Markets and Ausplay, an Australian market that serves the Pacific and Asian markets.

In 1996, the Australian, Canadian, and California facilities were moved to Farmington.

Then a fire destroyed the rotational molding area and severely damaged the rest of the manufacturing facility in 1998. Some operations were taken to other facilities or temporary locations for the next several months while the Farmington plant was rebuilt and expanded.

In July of 2004 Little Tikes was purchased by PlayPower, a manufacturer of indoor and outdoor play equipment. Brands also owned by PlayPower are Miracle Recreation Equipment Company, Hags, Soft Play, EZ Dock and Miracle Water Slides.

The large plant in Farmington’s west side industrial park is owned by the Farmington Industrial Development Authority. Over the years the facility was leased first by Iron Mountain Forge, and later by subsequent owners of the manufacturing operation.

The final lease expired about a year ago. Reportedly Playpower refused to sign another lease at that time, instead opting to rent the plant month-by-month at a premium cost. That was when speculation increased that some sort of major exodus was in the planning stages by the company.

Farmington Economic Development Director Walter Williams said Thursday that the IDA and city will work aggressively to secure a new tenant for the building.

tiredofthebull, in my comment about a class 3 ffl, i was referring to the fact that Missouri does indeed honor them, as opposed to your post stating that the state does not. the point that it is nearly impossible to obtain one is mute, as i already knew this fact and have never even considered trying to apply based on this. The would be no need for me to,as Im perfectly happy with bumpfireing semi autos and still achieving an extremely close to full auto rate of fire.
Now as far as the topic of comments straying from the articles topic, this seems to be common in these blogs, due to ppl commenting to what others are saying. i was merely commenting on a misconception that i seem to see alot about small towns, then commenting back to your post in which you insinuated that i do not know the gun laws and the legality of AK's and or that i dont know what weaponry i have; then posting back to Old Codger's comment, explaining that i am not paranoid, just prepared and giving a reason as to why i would be prepared in this way.

Wow.... was i ever right.. it doesn't matter what the story is.. someone can always make the comments about anything they want.. look at you guys... as to the licence, call atf and state highway and ask what you need to do for a fully automatic licence in MO. :) I have, for fun. Without some very high clearance somewhere, usually military, you can apply, but get denied.. know several that tried, and know a marine force recon that got denied 2 times before he got approved.. for the average joe, it's not going to happen.

Second - the story is about a company leaving farmington - not guns, revolutions, or anything else..

Finally, can't say i blame them for leaving farmington - power outages, outrageous costs.. they won't be the first company leaving that park...

Lastly, happy halloween, have fun.. and try to enjoy each day that the good Lord gives us.. you only live once.

RUkiddingme, if the post scare you my friend, then good, maybe you will research things that are going(nwo, nafta, gatt,Continued-international climate change meeting at Copenhagen, Bilderburg, ect) on and wake up before it is too late. I wish i was making this stuff up, but no, im sorry to say that these are the things that are really happening to our once great country. I also hope and pray that ALL Law Enforcement Officers in the area read these blogs, look these things up for themselves, and wake up to what is going on around them and hopefully will join the rest of the non corrupt law enforcement as oathkeepers. i have no use for the kkk, aryan brotherhood, or any other group that embraces ANY form of racism and hate. As far as visiting a nazi site, my friend, everytime you visit a government site thats what you are doing, because indeed America has gone from freedom to fascism. The America of today is the Germany of 1938, and if you cant see that sir, im afraid that you are blind, and i hope you manage to get on the right side of history.

If these blogs don't scare the hell out of ya, I don't know what would!!! OMG I hope Law Enforcement reads these blogs. Please tell me that you are all making this stuff up! I feel like I just visited a Nazi, Arian brotherhood and KKK convention! The NRA would be sooooooooooooooo proud of some of you.

lol.OldCodger, i must admit that was good, but no, not paranoid, just prepared for what is coming, as are most ppl who are awake and realize that the start of the 2nd American Revolution is just around the corner. I dont look forward to it, in fact i hope that all that is happening diffuses itself, but im afraid that all peaceful means of turning this country around have just about all expired, and that sadly,a violent revolution is what its going to take. As for being mobile with 1000s of rnds, that would be nice, but thats not practical due to weight issues. My normal loadout with the AK47 is 230 rnds in magazines (2 40rnd and 5 30rnd) and 200 loose rnds at max and 2 40rnd mags at min. I have prepared myself for this as best as my funds have allowed.i dont look forward to any of this, but, as a true Patriotic American, i am willing to fight and die to defend my family, the freedom of the republic, and the constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, as i hope many others from our area are prepared to stand and do.

Bassslayer-Thank you for your comment.I wanted to use my dad as an example of how easily the big heads can pull the carpet from under your feet. And how it does not matter what you do now in america if your not a big head or working for one your jobs,Packages, benefits can all be taken away with nothing you can really do about it.And i fear once they sign there treaty many will be faced with this reality check.Since this area is mostly middleclass and lower this area will be one of the first to become desolate. The jobs he has promised to create are without a doubt greenjobs,And since i do not see many ppl down here that would be willing to go and actually enforce those outrageous laws and taxes our area will be sealed for the deal.

projectmoneyreject - As with many other union memebers, your father, and my father too, paid his union dues without question. When my father retired, the union actively tried to deny his pension. When that didn't work, they tried to settle at a greatly reduced rate than the union contract promised. My father is now militantly anti-union. Me too.

I have a lot of interaction with union shops and non-union shops all across the country. I can testify and state, unequivocally, that the unions are corrupt to the core. Not the rank-and-file members that actually perform the work mind you although to move up the ladder within the union, one must set aside thier ethics and morals.

You see, the union benifit package is really nothing more than a political action slush fund. They use this money for targeting non-union shops and to donate to the democrats in government who then adjust policy and law to benifit the union. Pay-to-play writ large!

This corrupt administration is neck-deep in the corrupt union's hip pocket.

Let the personal attacks begin...

Continued-international climate change meeting at Copenhagen, now just six weeks away.Do you want to know what this is?Thanks to capntrade bill they are saying that we need to reduce carbon.Which i might add is something we need to survive. It is a treaty with other nations and will bring america down with it.We will have to pay taxes basically on everything. They will have law enforcing civilians,to create jobs of course to come into your home make sure your not being greedy with energy or breathing too much of there air,and to tell you how much you should pay based on how much carbon and resources you use. Also the reason for this tax will be to pay other less developed nations who they say have not put "dangerous carbon" into the air.Factories and jobs who burn anything or amit any kind of waste will buy what is like stamps for their waste. And the middle class and poor class will be taxed like you've never seen before. All in the name of climate change which is a myth. And those with cars who are green or homes that are not green will suffer.Look it up for yourself Cap N trade,And New Copenhagen Protocoltotheclimatechangetreaty

I agree with riverrat.A person always has to keep up his guard against all the evil folks in this world.I would NEVER dream of leaving my house without my trusty 50 cal. machine gun and a couple thousand rounds locked and loaded. In some cases it doesn't hurt to also strap on a grenade or two or three.(can anyone say "paranoid"?)

Now I write this comment with the best of intentions for this area.As i do not want to see all of you lose your jobs without warning. My dad worked at chrysler for 30 yrs.Luckily he retired before the government decided it was time to collapse the autoindustry. He should have got an excellent retirement pkg but didn't along with many of his co-workers and they sued. And the outcome with no surprize was they pretty much lost.Sad but very true.He also started out having a great medical pkg but guess what my parents are slowly losing that as well each yr it seems like they pay more for there prescriptions ones he needs to live no doubtly due to his kidneys and because he worked his body to death.Doing the same motions each day over and over. But he always brought home the money and never once complained. This is what i consider the backbone of america are ppl like him and you who go to work everyday doing jobs who are being phased out by robots and being wrapped, packed, and shipped overseas or elsewhere. He doesn't understand whats coming like many of you but i do. To tired of the bull before my finace gets up for work today and sees this i will say this to you his ak is not an automatic it is a semiauto i go shooting with him so trust me i know and i also know it is 100% legal. How do I know this because with most things me and him have both took the time to look it up.Also I feel extremely safe and secure when he carries on him most times it is his 9 but on days when the threat is a little more hightned around here he carries his Ak.He is one of the most responible ppl I know who have guns so it is not ppl like him who get the guns taken away.Iknow media would love for you to think so but just isn't the case. The media loves to jump on a stories that involves gun violence and without getting story from other stand point. Why do they do this?Simple because they love to push there antigun phobia on ppl so they handover there rights and think packing is a sin blindly so when you need one to defend your family your without.
riverrat420 posted at Friday, October 30th, 2009 at 3:11 am

also, i must ask,if in you comment you insinuated that the semi auto variants are not AK's, then why did a few months ago a headline in the usa today read "Dealer offers AK-47 with each new truck purchase", and why is it that every gun store you can go to, the dealer will refer to those variants as an "AK47" or and "AK74"? why is it if you google "AK47", hundreds of semi auto variants will show up? thats because even though they are variants, they are still AK's. All parts are interchangeable between semi auto and full auto versions, with the exception of the original auto sear, and anyone with any experience with an AK rifle knows this, which leads me to believe you have prob. never had any, and therefore dont know. I have a little advise, stick with commenting on firearms that you know, or at least take the time to look up some facts about ones you dont know about before commenting.
riverrat420 posted at Friday, October 30th, 2009 at 2:56 am

tiredofthebull, you need to go check you law books again. no where does it say that mo does not honor a class 3 FFL for one, which i do not have, unfortunately. all my weapons are semi auto, so the closest to FA i can get is bumpfire, which is right around 10rds/sec. also, there are hundreds of AK variants from several east block nations. The ones i own are Romanian, a WASR 10/63GP (AK47,7.62x39) with a tapco side folding stock, phantom flash hider, ergonomic pistol grip, and with red dot and laser sights; and a WASR 2 (AK74,5.45x39) with original wood furniture except for the upper handguard and forward grip. now my SKS is a chinese norinco type 56 (preban, 7.62x39) with a tapco t6 stock, flash hider, bipod, and replaced rail reciever cover and 3x9x42 p4 sniper scope.. I have put over 10,000 rounds of ammo through each of them, as that im kinda trigger happy, i know my weapons inside and out, forward and backwards, as i have been a huge fan of AK rifles since i was about 12. i must ask you, not to comment unless you know what you talking about

Until the politicians in this country get that we need to manufacture something in this country to survive. We can not survive as a SERVICE ONLY country. ITS SIMPLE: 1) Tax imports to 80% the price of American Made items of the same quality, and use this incoming tax to support and pay for the American workers quality health care plan. If people still want China made at a slightly less price, it available. 2) Make the top income making company in the world (WALMART) start paying their employees a salary that reflects that. You would not work at Exxon for $7.00/hr. And make this biggest money making business in the world (walmart) give all their employee some benefits. I talk to a woman whos been there 17 years who just got health insurance and has a $1500 deductible. BY THE WAY, MYSELF OR NONE OF MY FAMILY WORK AT WALMART OR EVER HAS. I JUST WANT PEOPLE TO THINK TWICE ABOUT SPENDING ALL THEIR MONEY THERE WEEK AFTER WEEK.

i don't comment much anymore - tired of typing i told you so.. lol.. anyway. riverrat - one question - and it's coming from a huge 2nd amendment supporter, gun owner, and soon to be conceal/carry permit ownwer...

AK? First, they are illegal in MO. AK's are automatic and one must have a federal licence, which MO doesn't recognize. SKS if semi-automatic is legal, and I would hope if you feel the need to travel with such a weapon, you would be more competent about what you carry/possess/own.

There is nothing wrong with carrying a handgun as long as one is safe, but i must ask politely if you don't even know what you have, or it's illegal, please stop.. it's fools like you that ruin it for the 99.5% of the gun owners that never do anything wrong... Thank you kindly.
riverrat420 posted at Thursday, October 29th, 2009 at 12:44 pm

A misconception that i see: I agree that Farmington/Park Hills, ect are for the most part quiet towns, but the same things that happen in urban communities can and do happen in small, quiet towns as well. As "safe" as you may feel and think you are, you are really no more shielded from the evils of the world than if you lived anywhere else. Ppl like to believe that because they live in a small town that nothing bad can happen to them when if fact the can. gang and domestic violence, rape, murder, robberies, they can all happen here in small town America just as well. Ppl need to be aware of this and know how to protect themselves if the need ever arises. I NEVER leave the house without being at least armed with a handgun (majority of the time an AK, or both, just depends on where i am going). I think ppl have had the comfort of nothing really bad happening in a while and have gotten used to letting their guard down, and when something bad does happen here, then its going to really be an eye opener to those ppl.

2nd to Lisa - Shame on you for being a grammar teacher, look at your post "youselfs", I don't think that is correct; sometimes when on this type of sight some folks type too fast, does not mean they cannot spell or have good grammar.

3rd re; Powerplay exiting-those who were part of original IMF employees, remember when mama Rubber took over and Powerplay in Monett was a competitor? And when the "downsizing" started, our folks were hired at the Monett Powerplay...my what a merry-go-round life is. Glad I was downsized before all the nonsence took place

I would leave too with the price of the unreliable Farmington electric and the slow sewage. If Farmington would quit spending precious tax dollars on the failed DARE program, maybe they would have more money to develop a more stable electric source which in turn wouldn't have damaged all of the high tech equipment at Play Power.

Old Codger;
Your interpretation is terribly wrong.

Anyone who thinks Farmington is at either end of the spectrum of living needs to take a drive down Ladue, and then maybe a swing down Cherokee St. in St. Louis.
Farmington is what it seems, a decent, quiet place to live and raise kids, and maybe grow old with friends.
There is not a street in this town I can't walk down, any time of day or night - without fear of gangs, drive-bys, or worse.
Some local communities are going downhill - some pulling themselves up,
but Farmington has held fairly steady thru hard times.

Farmington, is not 'Little Ladue', but then again, Ladue can't ever be Farmington. I imagine there are nights when the roar and stench of I64, and I 270 in the backyard of a $5 million home might make a resident wish for more pastoral digs.

I feel badly for the ex-employees at PlayPower, but it's no ones fault but the companies.

Remember correlation is not causation.
After all, you left and the town still grew...

Bassslayer:

I am not making some claim that suggests some endorsement of the UN. I like being a sovereign nation. You asked where it was written and I showed you.

This is a treaty we signed in 1948. My point is: if we signed this treaty to guarantee these rights as human rights for all nations, then it only follows that we should work to guarantee these rights to those of us who are Americans first. I believe that this is where our moral authority in the world comes from.

When our country signed this treaty, the CEO of a company - like GM's Alfred P. Sloan - likely made 50 to 100 times what GM's least paid employee made. It was justified because Sloan had at least 50 times the responsibility.

However, it is not that way anymore. Average workers have been expected to take on more responsibility, especially considering that there aren't really any middle managers anymore. You would think that this added responsibility and increased productivity would have closed this gap but now... the CEO's make 500 times what the routine worker makes.

Just a few points - first, NAFTA is a Clinton thing, and Pelosi has gladly shut down other free trade ideas.
Second, how has your taxes been lowered? oh, the few bucks back a check??? Yea, wait till year end taxes, it comes out of your refund.. not a tax break, just an adjustment in how it's done -- welcome to the left's "tax breaks"... get it now, pay it back later..

Third - trickle down doesn't happen overnight.. want the rich to hire? make their bottom line go up..

to Joe 63640;
I interpret your blog as saying that Farmington is slum, but a better class of slum than the surrounding towns in the area.I agree totally. That's one reason I moved out after living there 36 years. The start of the downfall was when the prison and it's accompanying riff-raff moved in.
Joe_63640 posted at Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Professor;

Farmington's "affluence" is simply a contrast - a simple growing lack of abject squalor.

St. Francois County is well below the state's average for wages, cost of living, property values, etc.
Not one community in our county even equals the state average in any economic metric.

The problem is not Sen. Engler "and his ilk" - it's another sad example of the same corporate greed that moved GM to Mexico, Korea and millions of other jobs overseas. Cheap Labor, few labor laws, a local government ready to give it all away to bring in a new business.

Do you remember when a local community called 'Flat River' was the shining, properous gem of the "Lead Belt"??
Now, many storefronts are abandoned, boarded up, Woolworths', Goldmans', the Ritz, all gone.
So is St. Joe Lead.
Playpower is no different.
Farmington is one of few communities that never relied on just one big employer for lifeblood, Trimfoot, Matco,
lots of industries ... but Farmington prospers.
I hope it continues.

You have got to be kidding me 'Professor'. The UN Human Rights Council is as corrupt as the rest of the UN and, frankly, the democrat party.

Am I to assume that you would be all for giving up or national soverienty(SP?, either in total or certain aspects, to a world government body?

The UN is an ineffectual and outright anti-american, socialists quasi one-world government. They do nothing for peace and facilitate near constant war wherever they are at.

Only a fool would believe otherwise.

Now, concerning the cost of living in Farmington, you may be on to something. I would not lay it at Englers feet because I believe this situation predates him. There is no doubt that the 'powers-that-be' in the past have moved Farmington in this direction. Overly restrictive building codes cause home remodeling to be cost-prohibitive. This, in turn, causes lower-income areas to fall into disrepair. I can afford the added cost to remodel but now the market will not support the cost and I don't want the hassle.

If I could unload my house (Good Area) without taking a bath, I would in a minute.

Has anyone come to the conclusion that the reason these jobs are leaving the area is because Farmington is becoming too affluent?

Wages in Farmington have not kept pace with the cost of living there (especially housing). Why wouldn't a company relocate to an area where the cost of living is cheaper and the cost of labor is going to be cheaper?

Instead of blaming Bush or Obama or Clinton, why not blame Kevin Engler? Didn't he set this into motion when he was mayor? Isn't it him and his ilk that want to turn Farmington into "Little Ladue?" Isn't this a consequence of that decision?
TheProfessor posted at Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

To Bass Slayer:

You wrote "Nowhere is it written that you have the right to a living wage."

Here is the UN Declaration of Human Rights:

Article 23
Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.
Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.

We signed this treaty in 1948. It is written. Hope this helps.

Blasterrat - you seem overly sensitive to greed. While it is one of the seven deadly sins, only a handfull, at most, of companies use greed as the driving force. I believe you have fell into the left-wing/dem trap that would have you believe that all corporations and capitalism, in general, is all about greed. It isn't. Of course all for-profit companies seek to maximize profits! Go figure! But to suggest that they all care nothing for the employee is rediculous. After all, it is in essence a barter system. The company needs labor and offers a wage to purchase that labor. If the market will support a certain wage, then the employer and potential employee agree and the agreement is sealed. Just as you do for any purchase made, you want to pay as little for it as possible and the same goes for the employer.

You are too easily influenced by the left-wing and democrat talking points. You are just one of many being used to further the lefts goals.

Who will pay you for your labor when the left destroys the profit incentive?

Bassslayer; The only thing I indicate with my post is.Companys need to care nmore about employees, their familys, and their health.Theese issues should rank right up at the top along with how much money the company makes, but it usaully doesnt.Thats my point. Many employers do not care about the employee or anything else, some dont even care about the customer, they are to concerned about money and how to get more of it at the exspense of their exspendable employees and their familys. They want the employee to give a third of their life to them, but they want to pay as little as possible for it.Theyve gotten so greedy that they now make smaller packages and charge more for it.A pound of bacon now days is only 12 oz.,Cant buy a pound of coffee anymore either,Give less charge more,GREED GREED GREED,It seems to me that this greed is a big part of our countrys problems.Take our jobs to other countrys, bring the product back to this country,Then have the nerve to exspect the unemployed to buy it.All in the interest of a dollar. You seem concerned about inflation?Well hows greed affect it?Im willing to say greed plays more in to it than any political party does.

Eckfan - I am 'working folk' and my taxes went down under Bush. They did not drop one thin dime under Obama. As a matter of fact, my 'tax' has effectively went up with that clown in the whitehouse. The pay that I am allowed to keep does not go quite as far as it used too. On top of that, it will undoubtably go up in the next year and most likely every year thereafter due to BHO's redistributionist policies.

You have got to seek mental health advice for the Bush Derangement Syndrome you STILL suffer from. What will it take for you to wake from the stupor of Obama Worship? For some people, it will only be when one day you wake up to find out that, while you slept and dreamt of all the hope and change, sometime overnight a small but significant portion of your freedom was taken.

But for some in the Cult of Obama, even then they will still have the blinders on because they are so invested.
Eckfan posted at Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 9:55 am

BassSlayer, Stop spending so much time fishing and start paying attention. Bush lowered taxes for his uber rich cronies, not the poor fools that voted for him. OBAMA lowered taxes on working folks.
BassSlayer posted at Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

blasterrat - as with PoliSci, you are out to lunch also. What you indicate with your post would create run-away inflation. As a citizen, we each have the right to refuse to work for any company as they have a right to fire you. If you do not like what they offer to pay you, you can counter or move on. Nowhere is it written that you have the right to a 'living wage' as most libs would like you to believe. You do have the right to get an education, learn a trade or better yourself in any manner appropriate which will elevate the amount of salary you can command. This also comes with strings. You may have to relocate. You may be required to work longer hours for no additional pay (salary)or take more responsibility.

It is imperative that we all live within our means. Just because you have to support a family does not mean the employer is required to pay you more. If you think you are worth more, then keep looking. Pack a luch because it may take a while!
BassSlayer posted at Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

to all - there are many factors involved with siting a new plant or consolidating operations at a single location. Local Tax regulations, local labor pool, unionization, raw material/finished product/sub-assembly transportation, utilities and community relations among other things. All of this goes into the calculus of a business decision.

Eckfan - you are plainly wrong. Libs bashed Bush for cutting taxes while we had record low unemployment. My taxes did not go down one penny and I am in no way 'rich' and nowhere near the $250k threashold that was promised.

Bottom line is that with the uncertain climate of business regulations, uncertain tax law changes and looming government regulation, (ie: cap and trade, healthcare) our economy will remain in limbo.

To lay this economy at the feet of Republicans is laughable. Dems were in control of congress as of 2006. Once it was seen that BHO would win the election, the economy tanked. This was all preceeded by the dems talking the economy down for 6 years all for political gain.

PoliSci - as always, you are out to lunch and do not know what you are talking about.
T-Bone posted at Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 10:05 am

You guys couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Tax cuts do spur the economy, it gives people more money to spend and creates more jobs, which in turn gives people more money to spend.
You get more on your check because he reduced your tax witholding. Wait till you file your return and people who used to get a big refund will find it smaller next year. Unless you bought a new house for the first time or are taking advantage you some of the green tax breaks you folks are going to be in for a rude awakening. That is a prime example of how liberals use the tax code to try and control you. You only get tax breaks if you do as I say. Taxes should be cut for everyone. When times are hard you cut taxes and things will get better. You people denying trickle down economics are just rediculous. If it weren't for taxe cuts after 9/11, you think we would have made it back so fast?

It is sad to see people lose jobs. But you know what is sadder?A multi billion dollar company that pays its employees as little as the employees will let them by accepting employment with them.Think about it.Lets say they pay ten dollars an hour[not likely]to the employee.Thats $400 a week before taxes for 40 hours work.Who can support a family on $400 a week? Its got to be a struggle.Whos family doesnt deserve more? The employee gives 40 hours a week of His and His familys life for a wage His family can barely make it on.While the Companys are worth millions and perhaps billions like Walmart. You know what? I say keep your stinkin jobs and good ridance.Yeah people will suffer as they are working for you.At least now they will have more time with their familys and may actually be more happy without your measely wages.Who needs a job that steals them away from their family for next to nothing while the Company and its higher ups live high on the hog? Folks theese Companys are first class examples of GREED at its worst. You bust your rear and when they feel the slightest pinch they pack up and leave you hangin.seeya!

PolySci-you can say that those programs were Bush programs if you want, but I believe that Clinton signed them into law. That makes them his. NAFTA and GATT anyway. Yeah, I know, it was a repub congress, but he could have vetoed them. Quit trying to spread well stated lies as the truth. No matter how it's phrased, it's still lies.

PoliSci, like you, my taxes have dropped drasticly under Obama. Unfortunately, the reason is my income has plummeted to 50% of what it was a year ago.
PoliSci posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Once again T-Bone and Farmer are off on their assumptions and opinions. My taxes have dropped since Obama's term, as has everyone elses, except those affected by the repeal of the Bush tax cuts to the upper class. Republicans have this enamored fallacy that if you cut taxes on the rich, in their benevolence, they will trickle their wealth down to the lower class. It's simply not true, and never has been true. These are the same folks who harp on deficits and spending when, if you'll recall Dick Cheney's words about the huge war deficits not calculated into the Bush debt, say out of the other side of their mouths, "Deficits don't matter". As Eckfan pointed out, it's about trade policies. NAFTA & CAFTA(1988), a George H.W. Bush program, was a definite step in the wrong direction, even after Clinton then added union supported line itemized protectionist legislation it was clear a veto would be overturned by Republicans. The talks of the NAU, the Amero currency, have been going on for decades. It's the Democrats, along with the Unions that support them, that are fighting for protectionist measures to save manufacturing jobs, not corporate greed ridden Republicans.

I'm really sad to see more jobs leaving the area. I'm not sure that it's a small consolation that at least those jobs are staying in Missouri, because I have a hunch that it's only for a short time until the operation moves south of the border.

projectmoneyreject: Your conspiracy theories may have merit to some degree, but posting things like "Please just educate yourselfs" isn't going to make anyone want to take you seriously. Proper, punctuation, coherent thoughts, and sentence formation could be things you'd want to consider in future posts.

NAFTA, "capntrade," "northamericanunion," and other issues are important to keep an eye on, but taken into the complete context of a global recession, I'm hopeful that things will improve sometime in the next two years. We've already seen significant improvements in the market over the last quarter, so I don't think we need to bury the dollar just yet.
Denver posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 9:55 am

Manufacturing jobs are getting harder and harder to replace because of our tax system. NAFTA certainly didn't help.

Anyone remember Huffy's big splash in Farmington years ago and our mayor riding a Huffy bike around the plant? We even had a restaurant named in honor of the place though now it looks kinda silly sitting there on highway 67 with a bicycle on it's front entrance.

As soon as the tax breaks given by the city ended, Huffy up and moved it's plant elsewhere. This while the elites were building their own neighborhood (and school) on the Southeast part of town while jobs funneled out of the city.

Good luck finding any similar jobs that will pay more than 8-9 bucks an hour the way the market is going.
Eckfan posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 9:55 am

Cutting taxes does not create jobs. Republicans have cut taxes big time on businesses and the rich when they were in charge the last eight years and this country has lost more jobs under them than at any time in history. Obama lowered my taxes and the taxes of any ordinary working American earlier this year. Hasn't helped create one job. The problem is unfair trade policies. If we had single payer health care, there would be no worker's comp. This country was not "weakened" by liberals. Who was in charge since 2001? If you want manufacturing jobs back, demand fair trade, public campaign financing and single payer health care, stop blaming liberals and look where the real problem is coming from.

T-Bone just about has this one figured out. As a private contractor I've contracted with Little Tykes / PlayPower thru the yrs and before them, Iron Mtn. Forge, as well as some other biz's in Farm. Industrial Park.

Companies, especially humongous ones like PlayPower just don't get up one morning and decide to move to Monett. The seed for this move was planted several yrs ago and nourished when the biz climate at Farmington City Hall changed. Monett was already a part of the PlayPower network, having a large facility there.

PlayPower IS becoming "more efficient" in that the cost of living in and around Monett is lower than Farmington. Thus, the cost of operation will have been substantially reduced. One downside may very well be that they don't get as elaborate floral table arrangements in Monett. They'll tough it out I'm sure.

Especially in light of today's economy who can blame PlayPower for wanting to survive and doing what's best for their bottom line.... I can't.

I'm glad they're staying in Missouri. They had numerous opportunities to go elsewhere.

They are just getting closer to mexico I wish all the CEOs of these companies that move their businesses to Mexico would looses their jobs to Mexicans. I have been through two companies moving to mexico one was here in Farmington the other was one of the world largest companies. These companies dont care about AMERICA, its the almighty $$$$
FARMER posted at Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 4:49 pm

when you start with the hourly rate and multiply that by 40% in some cases for work comp and payroll taxes then add in all the other costs associated with the 500 lb gorilla called our liberal tax crazed government it is no wonder businesses are shutting down and moving on.
T-Bone posted at Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 3:57 pm

Sounds to me they are trying to be more efficent. The day companies stop trying to produce items as cheap as possible is the day we are really in trouble. If we want to decrease unemployment, we need to cut taxes, plain and simple. Taking money from the rich and giving to the poor isn't going to bring this economy back, if anything it will just make people more dependent and weaken this country. I try and give the benefit of the doubt to the left and assume they are just ignorant but the more I see what they are doing, I am starting to believe they are wanting to weaken this great country of ours.

Sadly, Riverrat, you're mostly right.

Has anyone warned Monett how things will go?

BTW;
a definition: "Sockpuppet"
A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an online community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks with or about himself or herself, pretending to be a different person,[1] like a ventriloquist manipulating a hand puppet.

In current usage, the perception of the term has been extended beyond second identities of people who already post in a forum to include other uses of misleading online identities. For example, a NY Times article claims that "sock-puppeting" is defined as "the act of creating a fake online identity to praise, defend or create the illusion of support for one’s self, allies or company."[2]

The key difference between a sockpuppet and a regular pseudonym (sometimes termed an "alt" which is short for alternate, as in alternate identity) is the pretense that the puppet is a third party who is not affiliated with the puppeteer.

Consider Therapy and a Visit to Cabela's sporting goods.
