Are you missing your tax refund? According to the IRS, 20 taxpayers in the area are missing out on their refund due to mailing address errors.

The Internal Revenue Service reports it has had 1,357 regular refund checks worth more than $952,000 returned statewide by the Postal Service due to address errors. The checks average $702.

“We want to get this money to the people it belongs to,” says Michael Devine, an IRS spokesman. “Checks are often returned to the IRS because a life change, such as marriage or divorce, causes an address change.”

You can track the location of your refund at the IRS Web site, IRS.gov. Click on Where’s My Refund to find out your refund’s status. You will need to enter information from your 2008 tax return to use the online tool.

Those without access to the Internet may call the IRS Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954. This is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To inform the IRS of an address change , file Form 8822. This may be downloaded at the Web site or requested at 800-829-3676.

Direct Deposit is one way to avoid losing a check due to moving. Tax refunds can be directly deposited to either a personal checking or savings account.
