PARK HILLS — Only four days into registration for the spring semester, it was announced Thursday that 435 students had already enrolled for classes starting in January. It’s likely that number will reach somewhere in excess of last year’s 3,986 by the time classes start in early 2010.

That report and many others were given during the Mineral Area College Board of Trustees monthly meeting Thursday afternoon. Other reports included talk of upcoming customized training programs, reports on classified staff and faculty groups, and a plan to soon offer a “renewable energy technology degree.”

College employee Bev Hickman gave a report on a Workforce Development program in which the college will receive nearly $500,000 to be spent by June of 2010 to create a new degree program focused on renewable energy. It was explained that the board will be asked to approve purchases for equipment and curriculum, as well as giving their blessing to creation of the new degree program itself in coming months.

The trustees had started their November meeting by taking a seven-question science test. The same exam was the focus of a College Day exercise earlier this year, when high school students spend a day on the campus of MAC essentially getting a feel for the junior college experience.

While most board members and others in attendance at the board session had trouble successfully completing the short science quiz, North County High School student Erin Sutton scored proficient during College Day. For her high score she was given a telescope at the start of the board meeting.

And while the trustees were recognizing achievements, Dr. Steven Kurtz presented a medallion to former employee Chris Landrum. The medal was given to Landrum during a recent Missouri Community College Association convention. Kurtz said the honors had previously been handed out only to retiring administrators, and that receiving it from the association was a testament to the work Landrum had done for MAC over the years.

The board received and approved a plan to continue a tuition reimbursement program for staff who are working toward graduate degrees. Last year the college reimbursed about $19,000 in tuition to qualifying employees.

It was also announced during the meeting that Fourth Friday luncheons will resume Feb. 26. The board will meet for its next regularly scheduled session on Dec. 17.

Now... if they only had a rigorous academic program to go along with the record enrollment.
