Thanksgiving is nearly on our doorsteps and with that comes the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season. The Boy Scouts Scouting for Food is one more annual event leading up to the holidays.

Hundreds of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts from the Ozark Trailblazers district and their parents and leaders will be busy going door to door throughout the area distributing empty bags to residents.

Scouting for Food is the largest one-day food drive in the country. This is the 25th anniversary of the program which started in St. Louis and has since spread to councils across the nation. Each year scouts from the St. Louis Area Boy Scout Council (of which Ozark Trailblazers is a part of) collect approximately 2 million food items that will serve 400 food pantries within the council. The goods collected will meet a four-month demand for food in the area. Last year the local district collected 63,184 cans/non-perishable units of food.

Scouts will be canvassing their communities Saturday with bags in hand. Please fill your bag as soon as you receive it and place it by the primary entrance door of your residence. This way you will not forget about the bag. On Saturday morning, Nov. 21. those same scouts will be back at your doorstep to collect the bags full of food items. Be sure to have the bags out on your doorstep by 9 a.m.

Scouts are asking for non-perishable food products. Canned goods, especially those with meat are very much appreciated, but any canned goods such as fruits, vegetables, etc. are also appreciated. Boxed food products are also appreciated. Please do not include any old, dented, rusty or damaged canned goods and also no glass products.

Food pantries in the local communities which will be the beneficiaries of the food collected by local scouts are: Arcadia Valley Food Pantry, contact person Sharon Thomas 573-546-0556; Belleview Food Pantry, contact person Joe Montileone 573-749-3230; Elvins Food Pantry, contact person Wilma Peterson 573-734-6169; Farmington Ministerial Alliance, contact person Richard Meyer 573-366-9831; St. Vincent DePaul of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Farmington, contact person Kathy Niener 573-631-3936; First Presbyterian Church of Ste. Genevieve, contact person Rosalie Holcombe 573-883-3272; Frankclay Assembly of God, contact person Gene Lashley 573-562-7811; Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Park Hills, contact person Joe Rhodes 573-562-2968 and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bonne Terre, contact person Janet Basse 573-358-8641.

city guy:

I retract my former statement to you as you are so beyond help.

Keep making those intellegent, interesting, informative opinions about double spacing, adds SO much to ANY topic and/or conversation.

You keep a watchin' for all those double spacers now. Ya hear!

Git back to us if ya see anymore of dad burn double spacin' . Now that there is rediculous. With all the world problems that I KNOW double spacin' tops the list.

city guy indeed - FYI: just found a screw on the floor by my computer desk.

Any idea to whom it might belong?

thought so

city guy: people are starving and you are worried about double spacing(?)

P.S. some of us wear tri vocals and have to read what we type.

Your excuse for such a rude comment it what? (never mind) Probably wouldn't make sense anyway.

Didn't anyone in the city teach you that double spaces are for paragraphs.

U have a real good day and while your're at it look up the word stupidity
as you probably carry your little dictionary around with you all the time.

ba bye

D J - Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Want to give a huge thank you to the Boy Scouts and parents that at this moment are unloading food at Elvins Pantry (located in Parkhills) with the help of the volenteers at the pantry.

This pantry serves ALL of ST FRANCOIS COUNTY and is open TWO FULL DAYS A WEEK.

Central Schools also came through for us. Had a contest - one school had 5000 peices alone. The students not only collected but cheerfully unloaded it with the volenteers at the pantry.

These Central students ARE remarkable.

Can't forget the regulars that bring in car loads and truck beds full of donations, as we do serve ALL OF ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY TWO FULL DAYS A WEEK.

So many families that haven't EVER had to go to a food pantry before........

Many days serve well over 80 families in one day. Do the math.

Government commodities are free but they have cut back considerabley.

We rely on churches, boy scouts, school drives and community in general.

So thank you one and all.
