Country Mart robbery suspect identified

Kory Lyn Wakefield
The man whom police believe robbed the Country Mart store in Bonne Terre Wednesday night has been identified as 19-year-old Kory Lyn Wakefield of Farmington.

This afternoon, St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney Wendy Wexler Horn charged Wakefield with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. His bond was set at $100,000.

Each charge carries a maximum of 30 years to life in prison.

The probable cause statement alleges he threatened to shoot the employee after he demanded the money bags. The employee threw the money at him.

Wakefield made headlines last September when he told police that someone abducted him at gunpoint as he was heading to school at Central. He said the man ordered him to drive to Columbia. The man later changed his mind and said to drive him to Kirksville.

Wakefield said he crashed his white Ford F250 into a tree on a logging road in a conservation area in Macon County to get away from the abductor. He said he pretended to be unconscious and he saw a red vehicle pick up the man minutes later.

After the men left, he called 911. Wakefield had hunted in the area a few years before so he was able to provide directions for police to pick him up.

The truck was processed for evidence and a drawing of the abductor by an amateur artist was released to the Daily Journal. The case is still open.

I know what he did was wrong!! I know that if he pointed a gun to my childs head I would hunt him down. All I was trying to say was mainly to the people that say my child would never do this. I have heard people say this and the next thing you know they have done something wrong. I learned a long time ago not to say my child would never do. I do agree he needs to be punished!!! If it was my child or yours it would be hard enough to deal with everything that was going on and then to read all the bad things people are saying. It must be hard enough to deal with. I don't know the family and have never been in such a situation. I just don't think bashing him is helping anybody. Maybe I am not making any sence to what I am trying to say, so God Bless.

Blast...I couldn't care less if he gets a mental evaluation. He needs to go to prison. He may have emotional issues, but somebody metally unsound isn't able to tell right from wrong and isn't able to plan a crime like this. I'm sick and tired of the bleeding hearts, crying "MENTAL" for this "GOOD KID". If he was a good kid he wouldn't have done this.

Its obvious that this guy has problems.I hope our system helps this kid.If He is placed in prison its likly He will do hard time in protective custody, and His issues likly wont be addressed.I think for beginners a mental health evaluation is needed for Him.Im sure Hes not a bad person but rather an individual with mental issues. Its likly He can be helped. It will be sad if Hes placed in prison and left to fend the best He can.If so He will come out nothing more than a hardened criminal with more skills to commit new crimes. Will He be the next Ronnie Wright?

He's innocent, I am almost positive I saw him riding around Kirksville with a man who had a pork chop shaped ear while this incident was going down. You got the wrong man I tell ya...all said tongue in cheek...

Sad that this guy is screwing up his life really.

prom queen, at the age of 19 my son was in the military. Kory is a man. Nice men don't stick guns in peoples faces and rob them.

Attacking him? Do you feel it is OK that he held a gun on someone?

The sad thing is he will get a slap on the wrist and I have a feeling we will see his name in the paper again. And again. And again.
reader1975 posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

promqueen, seriously?! I pray you are never robbed at gun point. And if you are, please don't get angry or frightened...because hey! It might not be loaded or it might just be a BB gun!
tiredofthebull posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Tweety - i disagree on this one... counseling won't do anything... a year ago, a story about an abduction, a week ago robbery at gunpoint - it's time for some hard consequences.. i would venture that if he's given another "chance" he'll be commiting a horrible felony next time he decides he wants something that the "rules" don't allow him to have.

He's 19. Lock him up in prison - let him realize where his life is heading.. only he can change himself and as long as he's pulling guns on people, he needs to be behind a steel door.
little16 posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

I can honestly say my 19 year old son knows that if he did something like this he wouldn't get a once of support from me. Maybe because he knows this, it would keep him from considering something like this...I'm speaking very generally hear. Our kids (all of our kids, not just mine) know what kind of support they'll get. I don't know this family and can't say how they are handling this, but a lot of parents would be trying to hire the best attorney they could afford or even mortgage their home to try to lesson his punishment. If our kids believe that we believe in fair and true justice, and wouldn't help them out of a mess this big that they created, then maybe they wouldn't get into them in the first place. Kory getting so much support on his obvious fact abduction likely did more harm than good. If we teach our kids they'll have to pay for their own mistakes, and we don't bash their teachers every time little Jonny does poorly in school and hold them and us as parents accountable we'll be better served.
tweetygirl posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I agree locking him up for along time will only institutionalize him. He sounds like he needs some very good professional help. It sounds like something serious is going on with this kid. I don't know Kory but those who do seem to think he is a good kid, so it may be drugs or bad influences or psychiatric issues. He should spend some time in jail and have to do community service and seek good counseling if he is guilty.
tiredofthebull posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 12:59 pm

This probably won't get posted, but I carry a handgun for self defence. Had I seen this happening, I would have used it in a heartbeat. He's lucky no one saw this as his life could have ended in the parking lot at County Mart at 19 years old.

Send him to prison. Let him mull his call over for 5 years or more. Hopefully, somewhere along the way, someone will teach him something.
tiredofthebull posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Promqueen - have you ever shot a BB gun at a tin can? Seen the hole? What if that was your eye.. maybe the BB passes thru into your brain.... oops, you're dead...

A gun is a gun is a gun... ALL should be handled the same.. as a weapon with one purpose, to kill something. They need to be handled responsibly.

This MAN is lucky no one was in the parking lot with a firearm, or they would hvae legally been allowed to use it on him (in defence of a fellow human being).

There is NO excuse for his actions, NO good reason to point a firearm at another person, NO validation to do what he was doing.

Buying beer doesn't make you an adult. Responsible actions and decisions (such as not committing armed robbery) make one an adult.

He's 19. he should know right and wrong, and he'll hopefully spend many years in MO prison system for his stupid act.... and probably a few more for that wonderful story we read about last year...

PromQueen;

In an earlier day, we’d have torches, pitchforks, and a rope
-But we’re more civilized now… and in shock this ‘good kid’ keeps making bad headlines.
As far as your
‘BB gun theory’ here's a fact...- I quote “Police are asking the St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to file charges of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and possession of a concealed firearm.” - DJ

-Doesn’t sound like a BB gun, does it?
Let me ask you.. ( hypothetically, of course) – if he had raped that girl, would you still think of him
as “A Kid?”
All I want is justice, not ‘red ants’.

eornut; My heart goes out to you, being a parent is the best, and the toughest job in the world, especially when your child strays quite a bit from the path. I once found a book that helped greatly,
called “Teen Proofing” – Fostering Responsible decision making in your teen. I highly recommend it.
Personally, I’ve never met any of Leadington’s PD, and have no issues at all with them,
but I *do* have opinions, which I think is why we’re all here…
Apnatic posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 11:51 am

To promqueen..you must be young...buying a beer makes you an adult? A bb gun can kill you..would you want a gun of any kind pointed at you by a stranger, would you stop and ask if it was loaded? Even if he did not intend to shoot, the gun could have gone off.
It is a crime, he knows he was wrong, he admitted it. Don't blame the parents, he is 19, he made a wrong choice, now the consequences. Pray for him and his family-he should have thought it over more carefully before taking that step.
promqueen posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 7:09 am

You people are making the assumption that the gun was loaded. You don't know if the gun was loaded or what type of gun it was, for all you know it could have been a bb gun. So stick with the facts and stop trying to add drama to satisfy your own sad little lives.

You make me sick, you are attacking this kid like red ants at a picnic.

Yes, I said kid! If you can't buy a beer you aren't completely an adult.
little16 posted at Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 6:49 am

eornut...I don't think people are talking "smack" as you put it. Most people are merely saying he deserves what the law provides in cases like this. He has proven he is a danger to soceity and therefore should be punished. Now I know people might say he would never hurt anybody, "Oh he would have never pulled the trigger". Fact is even if the gun wasn't loaded, (which I've not heard that it was or wasn't) him having a gun could have caused the police to fire on him. They could have hit somebody else in the process. For this reason alone he should go to prison. He will likely get a short sentence and be released on parole after about 3-5 years. I think that's more than fair to HIM.
T-Bone posted at Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 4:13 pm

The law is pretty clear when it comes to what age a person is considered an adult. Unless he can prove some mental health issues, I don't see him avoiding prison. It’s sad when youngsters make bad decisions that really screw up the rest of their lives but it happens every day. There are few mulligans in life, where you can do over’s when you really screw up.

I actually think the alleged abduction was a cry for help, a cry that went unanswered to save the family some embarrassment. I'm sure they are regretting that now. Maybe something like filing a false police report would have gotten enough punishment to make him not want to run a foul with the law again, but I guess we will never know now.
bballplaya posted at Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 2:04 pm

WOW! Ok, to username: kit... For ONE "never seen so many people that are so hurtful" ARE YOU SERIOUS?? Holding a gun to someones head isnt hurtful?! Where is ur head? And TWO "What if this was your child?" UM WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR CHILD WHO GOT A LOADED GUN HELD TO THEIR HEAD? I'm sure you wouldnt be bouncing around with glee! Or would you? Your comment makes me wonder! Now should people be bashing him and mouthing him probably not but, but you act like he did no wrong in this act! My prayers do go out to his family that they can cope with this problem their son has caused.

I know but wont say cause I wanna watch you all squirm with regrets of you bad choice of manners !!

Everyone is so quick to talk smack about this story because it involves a Wakefield. I take it that who ever is talking smack about them is doing out of anger because they have had problems Chief Wakefield or one of Leadington's officers. Hey I have had a run in or two with them but I that doesnt give me the right to sit there and talk smack about one of them or their family members !

flatriver I agree with you on his doing the crime now he needs to serve his time. Even if he is only 19 he is a adult by law and I bet his parents think he is adult and very mature for his age. Why else would he have free rein of a truck do as he pleases with. And to drive across the state at age 17 and not get lost. And texting with one hand without looking at the keyboard. He's not only a mature adult but a very intellegent adult.
flatriver posted at Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 at 2:33 pm

I don't feel sorry for him. Sticking a gun in someone's face and stealing bags of money is not a 'mistake." He needs to do the time...he did the crime.
Parents should have spent more time with him instead of partying all the time.

Seriously what are you praying for? For him to get acquitted? For him to go do something stupid again with a gun? Im going to pray. Pray that he gets locked up and doesnt get to be around anyone he can harm.
commonsensesayer posted at Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 at 9:32 am

Of course everyone has their right to an opinion..........but,

ed.D., you rationalize defending this kid by saying "What if this was your kid?". Ok, fine. Here's one back at ya. What if it had been your daughter with a gun in her face? The average hand gun has a 5 pound trigger pull. So 5 pounds of force is all that was between her, and death. Or to those that want this guy to spend a day or two in jail, then parole, probation, what if you lost someone at the hand of a parolee? Are you willing to have the blood of the next victim on your hands? I highly doubt it. Just give them all a hug, right? For the safety of society, he needs a lengthy incarceration. I don't care if it does him good or not. It will prevent him from making anyone else a victim!

- even old enough to become a Police Officer ...

At his age, education and size,
He is NOT a "Child".
Joe_63640 posted at Saturday, November 21st, 2009 at 4:35 pm

EdD, eornut ;

First, Ed - it once WAS 'my kid' - and my lifetime of coddling a young'un was a contributing factor to that child's introduction to law enforcement. The only message that lasted was the justice-is-blind approach; simple, fair and merciless. My offspring prosper today because justice worked.

The Lord is NOT the only Judge, just the final one, and the only one where perfect justice can be expected. Meanwhile Circuit Court Rules.

Eornut; - this 'kid' has been 'bad seed' for years, pull your head outta whatever it's in and look at facts. "If it was Your Kid..." WHAT IF it were your Kid at Kory's Gunpoint?
- You'd already have a rope in hand, and so would I.
As far as last years attempt at attention - I pointed out at the time that a Ford F250 in MINT condition could not have made that drive without refueling - His was hardly mint condition. You Were lied to.

Like The other Wakefield, all I ask for is real and fair justice.

To all of the users stating that he needs to be sentenced to a maximum sentence, think about this; what if it were your kid? What if your child made a terrrible mistake such as this one. No one knows the reasoning behind what this child did and in no way was it justifiable or correct, however people do deserve a second chance.

Oh, lets stir up some more drama and make unknown accussations about whether or not the abduction was truthful. Who cares, it is in the past and should hold no water within this case; nor will it in Court.

Prosecutors always tend to put forth the maximum charge so that they can work with plea bargains; don't believe me? Check court cases. I pray for everyone involved in this sitation; those who encountered Kory, The Wakefield Family, and Kory himself because the Lord is our only Judge & he does a great job; unlike anyone else. He forgives, as we should follow his likeness and also show forgiveness for someone who has made a tragic mistake.

Nope, don't think this country is in great shape; but I certainly don't think taking "Christ out of Christmas" is what got us here. And I certainly don't think it's what caused this young man to do such a thing. I also doubt "no belief in anything" forced to him to pull a gun on someone.

Hopefully Country Mart rewards her as well...Seems like an open and shut case...he is found driving the vehicle used in the robbery....with the money bags..money..receipts..gun..matching the description of the perpetrator...and not to mention he confessed...I say put him away...no one should ever have to stare down the barrel of a gun and be threatened to be shot...no one!!

He just needs to find Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior; God Almighty to help in this tragic time of need. He needs to let Jesus lead him to a path of good instead of bad. If he had found Jesus we wouldn't hear such things of him. If Jesus was on his shoulder Jesus would have told him, "no no Kory, that's bad"; Jesus would have taken care of him. Lord Almighty!

Oh, and he should have read the Pledge of Allegiance at breakfast that morning too; all would be well had he just done that!

Am I correct Ribeye?

He could go to Confession and BAM, he will be forgiven. That's always an option.

What message would it send to any criminal if they knew that a bleeding heart society would just let them out after a couple days in jail when they commit and armed robbery. Heck, they'd be lined up at every bank and liquor store in the country! What we need to do is stop making prison a vacation camp and give these jerks some incentive NOT to go to jail! "Give him a fighting chance to do good in life"? What has the last 19 years of his life been? How many more chances does he get before you say "o.k. I guess he's going to have to stay in jail this time"? Maybe you would feel different if his gun was in your face next time. We should release everyone in jail and prison today and give them all a fighting chance to do good in life. Yeah, that'll fix it.

Professor, EdD;
While I agree with the basic point that prison really only prevents, it rarely rehabilitates - I have to remind you that the comments below carry some weight...the judging will be before a judge - as it should be. The sentencing will be without regard for his family, as his actions were. Those who notice a kind of pattern here aren't wrong. I'm fairly certain he really does need mental help, but then so do many violent offenders. If your shock treatment were used, I think he'd be back...needing attention again.

Next time around - next deer season or whatever, armed robbery didn't cut it - what next?

Prison will make certain we don't need to find out the hard way. Reasonable parole, then probation.
This kid pointed a gun at innocent people and threatened to kill them.

I think ANY amnesty, leniency, or 'shock incarceration' will only insure he makes headlines again some day.

IMHO... grab the books, start throwin' 'em...

Forgiveness is fine..and a good thing. Yet, forgiveness without accountability teaches nothing.

If, indeed, this very young person used a gun to rob a store, then I feel sorry for him..bad choice. I feel MORE sorrow for the poor person who was scarred for life by being the victim of this crime.
Being held up by an armed robber is not a small inconvenience. Justice demands punishment, and there are no winners.

YES he is a hard core criminal...He by himself, with nobody with him, held a gun to somebody...this makes him a hard core criminal. You can't blame this on who he's hanging with, he was alone. Good people or not, something went wrong in his upbringing. And no he shouldn't and won't get a slap on the wrist for this, he will do real time, and so he should. OMG...he held a gun on somebody to take what wasn't his, it doesn't matter if he did it for attention or not. He should not be able to be free for a long time.

Think about this, if he gets probation for this, what will he do next?

In my opinion, we as a society should not judge a child on one incident that we do not have all support evidence; we should not judge at all if we are to follow the Good Lord's word. With everything right now looking bleak and negative, situations always have two sides to them and even though this should have and could have been avoided in so many different ways, this gives no one, including myself to pass judgment on this child.

To "TAD", a "hard core criminal" huh? That statement is so far exaggerated. For one, you know nothing of this case except what has been published; he has no criminal record besides a speeding ticket before hand, and now he is a "hard core criminal", learn people make mistakes.

For those of you who are so easy to pass judgment and condemn, think of the times that you were the one in the hot seat but you weren't caught. Most of us can sit back and dig out the skeletons in our closet that seemed to slip through the crack. Give the kid a chance; That is what the Lord would do, forgive. WWJD?

The biggest mistake that we, as a society, can make is to hang this kid from the highest tree in the criminal justice system.

Let him get a taste of jail for a couple of days or a week or so and then , let him out on probation. The one thing you don't want to do to young people is get them used to being in jail. At that point, it is no deterrent. They wont be scared of it anymore.

If any of you have any decency in you, you should ask that eh be let out of jail as soon as possible and ask theat he be put on probation. Give this kid a fighting chance to do good in life. Once he is a part of the system, there wil be no turning back.

1 more thing....did he call his girlfriend without looking at his phone this time?
bets posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

OMG.....maybe he followed the abductor into the store and the abductor made him do it....this would be so funny if it wasn't so sad.
I do feel sorry for the parents, but this kid know's right from wrong. From all I've read he know's right from wrong....maybe he figures he got away with his stupidity once he would get away with it again. I don't think Cledith will be able to help him this time

i am just wondering if this boy is starving for attention? It is hard to believe that several people say that he is a good kid. but then he turns around and does this. the other day on oprah they was talking about disorders that people suffer from and one of them was a disorder that they always had to be in the spotlight good or bad. i hope that he gets the help that he needs. and i am so glad that no one was hurt during this ordeal. and to the workers good job.

This is funny, the kid obviously likes attention, the whole abduction thing last year? Now this, sheesh! Yeah he may have *BEEN* a good kid, but he obviously is not one anymore.. You may have *THOUGHT* that you know him, you was deceived.. Lock him up!.. He will get all kinds of attention in Jail, im sure!

I have know Kory for a short while. My son has been friends with him and hung out at his house. Kory was always so nice and well mannered when he would come into my place of business. I was so shocked to hear about this. I hope that they can get him so help and figure out what makes a boy snap like that. His parents are really good people and need prayers not mean jokes.

I know Kory real good and it is a shock to me that this happened he has a good family and has always been a good friend i just believe there is more to the story i know that the kid didnt need any money i just think he was tied in with the wrong crowd im not saying he shouldnt be punished severely but some people need to do some investigating or something over this case something doesnt add up at all

Amazing--what does "Deer Season" do to this guy. Guess he needed some Deer Camp CASH.
Blessed1 posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

My heart breaks for the family. We can only do so much to raise our children in the direction they should go and I guarantee he was not raised in THIS direction. Bad choices usually have bad consequences so Kory will most likely suffer for his actions. Unfortunately, the family will feel the hurt as well. Thoughts and prayers to Sonny & Katrina

Did Bonne Terre police use the sketch artist that Leadington police uses? Wonder if Sasquatch got away again? What ever happened to Sansquatch anyway? Oh that's right, it never happened!
little16 posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

okay...where did he get the gun? Was it police issue?
tdsike posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 5:32 pm

My child was one of the employees who was there when this happened. I am very glad it didn't end more violently. I hope he gets the help he so desperately needs! You can't begin to imagine what was going through my mind when I received the "phone call!" I am very proud of the way my child and the other 2 employees handled the situation!!!!
TAD posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

I can't even begin to listen to anyone who supports this hard core criminal. There is no doubt that he has issues but he has to be stopped. His lies last year and now this. Folks this kid has problems beyond repair. I'm not one to give up on a boy of his age but he needs serious help and if it means 20 or 30 years locked up so be it. Sorry but don't want my kids traumatized by this whack job. Sorry to the family. You are good people.

I know Kory pretty well. We talked quite often and to even think he could hold someone at gunpoint and rob them disturbs me very much. I know Kory as the sweet, always happy, smiling...Kory and to hear this breaks my heart. I wish that I could know what was going on in his head to make him think to do this. It's hurtful to me to know that someone who once was a good friend of mine is now a "criminal" It was hard for me to read this article and even comment...but I just couldn't believe Kory Lyn Wakefield could do a thing like this. You know they always say it's always the last person you suspect... well this statement is definitely true considering this situation.

Hmmm....why am I not surprised? I remember the abduction story well. And all the postings that said "I know him and what a great kid he is....." Maybe the unknown abductor force him into Country Mart?
readthinkwrite posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

I know that I will be cruicified for this but here it goes: Those of us who have watched Kory grow up, and know his family are shocked and in disbelief. I am praying that there is a reason why he did this, other than the obvious. My prayers go out to his entire family; Kory, I don't know why you did this. Please know that everyone has not lost their faith in you. God is good, and he can still help you. Whatever is going on in your life, please reach out and get the help you obviously so badly need.

Ahem...

I would like to formally withdraw my earlier request to the staff and Editor of the Daily Journal for an in depth investigation on the year and a half old "Abduction" story.

I think the story was just told.

To those who "supported " him, and said what a "great Kid" he was, how he "could never do anything like this" (Lying about abduction) -

I don't have the heart to say it .
little16 posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

WOW...another wakefield story. Now to those that believed his story about the abduction...are you still with him on this?
superbiff posted at Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
