PARK HILLS — It may be the joy of every child to wake up this morning to the sight of a white blanket of snow covering everything in sight, knowing it means a white holiday from school, but to the area high school basketball players and coaches it only brings a sigh of disappointment.
The MAAA Conference Tournament got underway on Saturday as scheduled, but only after a fright of the opening round possibly being postponed due to Friday’s snow. Tournament administrators began making plans, if the roads for the 16 teams involved were too treacherous, to somehow keep the integrity of the tournament’s 36 game schedule intact.
Luckily, the roads were cleared for the most part and all eight games were concluded. They were not that lucky for Monday’s scheduled games. Trying to play all the games outside of school hours, the tournament was scheduled for four games each night with an eight-game finale on Saturday with all the games to be played at Mineral Area College.
Any postponement meant a backlog of games. More than one night of canceled games makes even a more serious problem of the tournament being completed in the week’s allotted time.
Monday’s cancellations forced administrators to split the venue so that the tournament will hopefully get back on schedule.
Instead of the eight games of quarterfinals scheduled to be played at MAC in two blocks of four on Monday and today, all eight games will be played on today with the four boys quarterfinals to be played at MAC and the four girls games to be played at Central High School. Maybe?
That was the plan when Monday’s games were called off, but whether or not the games will be played or called off for today has not yet been decided, and if they are postponed, plans for make-up games the rest of the week will definitely be a quandary for the administrators to figure out.
