In December of 2017, Specialty Granules LLC (SGI) Annapolis facility received the Silver Award for Environmental Excellence for 2016 from National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA).
The Silver Environmental Excellence Award is the second highest honor in the environmental category given by the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. The awards program recognizes aggregates operations throughout the United States and Canada for superior performance as environmental stewards and for community involvement and support activities that have enhanced the image of the aggregates industry.
SGI is a leading producer of semi-ceramic coated, colored mineral granules to the North American residential and commercial roofing markets. The Annapolis facility has been in operation since 1965 and currently employs 170 people.
SGI has partnered with the City of Annapolis to help address the city’s wastewater treatment needs. The city is using a part of SGI’s property to land apply its wastewater on an old rock fines stockpile. This will be mutually beneficial for the city and SGI. The city will be able to meet more stringent water quality limits and the nutrient rich wastewater will help establish vegetation to help reclaim the rock fines stock pile. The Annapolis facility is currently working on several other environmental projects and has plans for more in the future.
