It’s the time of year to start making plans for Valentine’s Day and a local event is returning for its eleventh year of providing fun for spouses and sweethearts.
Since 2007 the Park Hills-Leadington Chamber of Commerce has hosted Sweetheart Trivia with sponsorships and support from area businesses. There are already seven teams registered for event, which is scheduled for Feb. 10 at Elizabeth Hall in Leadington.
Chamber Executive Director Tammi Coleman said the event has continually grown each year, with last year being the best yet.
“It’s just grown, and grown and grown,” she said. “Last year was our biggest. We had between 20 and 22 teams. It’s just gotten bigger and bigger.
“We’ve never had the problem of it falling back and thinking that maybe it’s run its course. Every year, we have one or two more teams than the year before, so it keeps growing.”
The night will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner, featuring the return of the popular pasta bar and salad.
“There’s different kinds of pasta, different kinds of meat and different sauces and toppings so you can create your own concoction,” Coleman said. “That seems to be a big hit, along with the salad. We stick with that because everybody seems to like it.”
Trivia will commence at 7 p.m., with 10 rounds of 10 questions pertaining to love, marriage and relationships. A total of $1,000 cash is up for grabs, with $100 going to the winner of each round.
There will also be door prizes and a dessert auction, both of which are still open for sponsors and donors.
“We need lots and lots of door prizes,” Coleman said. “We like to try to have enough door prizes so that at least every couple that plays gets to take something home. We’d love to see every single person take something home, and we’ve had years where we’ve been able to do that.
"We’re also looking for any local restaurants or bakeries that are interested in donating some desserts for the auction.”
She said that door prize and dessert donors will receive recognition the night of the event for their support.
Coleman said a new addition to the trivia night this year is a "selfie station" where attendees can pose with props to capture the memory of the night.
“Selfies are just a big thing right now,” Coleman said. “You see the stations at weddings and events, with selfie props and booths and those kind of things. So we thought it would be cool to have a frame made with the Sweetheart Trivia hashtag. We’ve bought all the Valentine’s props like moustaches and hats and all the things that go with it. We thought it could really help people recognize the event.”
A portion of the night’s proceeds go toward the chamber’s Scholarship Fund, which provides a Central High School student with a $2,000 scholarship to Mineral Area College, Central Methodist University or Missouri Baptist University.
Registration is open until Feb. 7, with a maximum team size of eight per table. The $20 registration fee includes trivia, dinner and door prize tickets.
