Participants said "Farewell to Summer" Sept. 11 at Revival Trade & Coffee Company's Canvas 'N Corks event.

Local artist and Fredericktown Middle School Art Teacher Doug Howell guided the class through the process of painting an umbrella on a sandy beach.

This is the third time Revival Trade & Coffee Company has hosted an event like this.

"We had a test run and it went well so we just keep having him (Howell) back," Tracy Edmonds said. "Everyone really likes him."

Edmonds said the beach theme was requested by a past customer and the farewell to summer slogan seemed to go well with it.

Many came out to the event with most tables full of canvases and painters. The cost was $35 per person and no experience was needed.

Howell provided each painter with brushes, a canvas with sketched guidelines on it, paint, and an apron. He then followed along with everyone showing them each step in detail.

It took participants around two hours to complete their paintings as they followed along with Howell's instructions.

One participant was there celebrating her birthday with her aunt. While another group was just having a girls night out.

Howell has been doing events like these throughout the surrounding area since the summer of 2015.

"I saw they were doing them in St. Louis so I went to a class and thought 'hey I could do this,'" Howell said. "So I just started doing them."

Howell is a graduate from Southeast Missouri State University with a BS in Secondary Art Education. He focuses on providing creative and fun experiences for all ages.
