The Fredericktown High School Basketball Boys and Girls Teams are competing in the MAAA Conference Tournament this week at Mineral Area College.

The No. 9 seed Blackcats won their tourney opener, 55-50 over No. 8 Arcadia Valley, Saturday, at Kingston High School.

The Tigers jumped to a 9-2 lead early, but Fredericktown surged ahead to take a 23-17 halftime lead. Fredericktown led by as many as 12 points, late in the third quarter, but the Tigers closed the deficit to two points with just over a minute to play.

For the Cats, Logan Winkelman led with 18 points. Seth Miller scored 14, Grant Shankle had nine, and Colton Rehkop scored eight. Miller led with 15 rebounds.

With the victory, the Cats advanced to the tourney quarterfinals, Monday, at MAC. The Cats lost 72-49 to Central.

Fredericktown played a strong first half against the top-seeded Rebels. Central led just 7-4 after one quarter. The teams traded the lead in the second quarter, but Central took a 25-21 advantage into the break.

The Rebels were able to pull away during a 31-16 third quarter.

Winkelman led the FHS offense with 21 points and Miller scored 10.

The Cats will take on No. 4 seed Potosi in the fifth-place bracket, at 4 p.m., Thursday, at MAC.

The No. 10 seed Lady Cats lost their tourney opener, 47-33 to No. 7 West County, Saturday, at Potosi.

West County took each of the first two quarters by a 15-6 margin. Trailing 30-12, the Cats outscored the Bulldogs 15-6 in the third.

Mallory Mathes led the Cats with eight points. Callista Francis and Maddie Burrows each scored seven points, Kylie Mann scored four, Emmaline Glore and Mattie Whitworth each scored two, and Evann Davis had one point. Francis added 12 rebounds and four steals.

Fredericktown will play Kingston at 5:30 p.m., today, at MAC. If they defeat Kingston, the Cats will play at 2 p.m., Saturday, at West County.
