MAC prepares to light up tree with annual Christmas Celebration

Mrs. Claus, who annually reads “The Night Before Christmas” to the kids, and jolly old Santa will be at this year’s Christmas celebration and tree lighting at Mineral Area College, which takes place Dec. 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the concourse of MAC’s Park Hills campus.

With an eye toward celebrating the coming holidays and offering holiday cheer to the community, Mineral Area College staff members are planning the community college’s annual Christmas Celebration from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the concourse area of the Arts & Sciences Building. It’s free and open to the public.

Chris Visnovske, celebration co-chairperson of Classified Staff, said everyone joining in the celebration will find holiday music by MAC musicians and the employee-led “Tinsel Tones,” lots of cookies, and a chance to win big by purchasing tickets to win a Christmas tree decked out with lottery tickets. Proceeds will go to support the MAC Cardinals Food Pantry, which helps feed hungry students.

“We’re so glad to be raising money for MAC’s new initiative to combat food insecurities among students. No student who is working and taking college classes to better their lives should have to deal with hunger,” he said. “I also want to thank Erin Sites and the rest of the staff for organizing this great event.”

The Christmas Celebration has been a decades-long tradition at the college.

“It is such a festive event with the MAC Jazz Band and Choral Choir,” he said. “The children enjoy sitting in front of the Christmas tree as Mrs. Claus reads ‘The Night Before Christmas.’ There are lots of dessert goodies and hot chocolate, and of course Santa himself makes an appearance with something for each of the children.”
