The occupant of a Farmington apartment complex received critical injuries when their unit caught fire Feb. 4.

According to Farmington Fire Chief Todd Mecey, at approximately 12:38 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to a call reporting an apartment fire at the Birch Tree Apartments, located at 45 Birch Tree Lane.

"On arrival by the first unit, there was one person that had been trapped in the fire," he said. "They had been rescued by a neighbor on our arrival. The neighbor had also used a dry chemical extinguisher and partially had the fire under control. Our department had the fire under control very quickly after we arrived.

"The crews rendered medical aid to the patient and finished extinguishing the fire. The patient was flown to Mercy Hospital Creve Coeur by Survival Flight helicopter in extremely critical condition."

Mecey said that the state fire marshal would be investigating the cause of the fire.

"Being as it was a serious injury, we always make sure the fire marshal investigates it," he said.

Assisting the Farmington Fire Department on the call were the Wolf Creek, Doe Run and Park Hills fire departments.
