What started out as a routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase Tuesday night.

According to reports, the Missouri State Highway Patrol attempted to stop 45-year-old Tony Backues of Park Hills for a traffic violation.

The chase started in the area of Berry Road in Bonne Terre and went down U.S. 67 southbound. The patrol eventually placed spike strips across the highway near the Desloge exit in an attempt to end the chase.

Once Backues’ car hit the spike strips he veered into the median, ending up on the northbound side of the highway. He jumped out of the car and tried to get away on foot.

The patrol caught him and he was arrested and taken to St. Francois County Jail and book on counts of resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated.
