The Mineral Area College women’s basketball team has planned a special event to honor longtime school registrar Linda Huffman during its home contest against region rival Crowder on Feb. 16.
Huffman, who died in January following a battle with cancer, worked at MAC from 1995 until her passing.
The Lady Cardinals are currently leading a fundraising campaign that will benefit both the Meredith Huffman Scholarship Foundation, headed by Linda’s daughter, and the Walker Johns Foundation which helps three local children with cancer.
“Linda was an amazing woman who helped our program as far back as I can remember,” MAC assistant coach and former player Briley Milfeld said. “She paid so much attention to the small stuff and really made our teams feel like they were loved.”
T-shirts commemorating the event are being sold at a cost of $12 and can be purchased at the MAC bookstore or through members of the team.
Various give-aways, including a tie blanket with the phrase “Lady Cards Help Fight Cancer,” and other silent auction items will also be offered during the 2 p.m. game.
Paper basketballs will also be displayed on gameday, and can be bought for $1 each. They contain the words “in memory of” or “survivor” to honor loved ones affected by cancer.
Anyone seeking further information or businesses wishing to donate may contact Milfeld at 760-2649 or email@example.com.
“We love Linda very much, and putting this game on for her is the least we can do to honor this wonderful woman,” Milfeld said.
The Lady Cardinals ascended to the No. 13 ranking last month in the NJCAA national poll following the best start in school history, and will look to avenge a previous road loss to Crowder.
