A Mineral Area College men’s basketball player continues recovering in a St. Louis hospital following a shooting late Thursday night in Berkeley, Mo.

Sources say Leon Watkins, 19, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body during an argument near his home.

Charges of assault and armed criminal action have been filed against 20-year-old Dionte Peebles.

Mineral Area College athletic director Chad Mills issued a statement.

“We were saddened to hear about Leon Watkins and the unfortunate situation that occurred Thursday night. Leon was shot at his home in north St. Louis. Leon is a model student-athlete at Mineral Area College, taking advantage of every opportunity he has been afforded.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Leon, his family and friends as he continues on the road to recovery. The entire MAC Cardinal nation looks forward to his return to school this fall.”

Watkins is a graduate of McCluer High School and lone projected returning starter for the Cardinals, who posted a 25-9 record last season while earning their first NJCAA national tournament berth in 36 years.

Watkins averaged 10.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists while making 41 percent from 3-point range during his freshman season at MAC.
