Mineral Area College’s student movie club, MACFlix, is once again offering free movies this Saturday on the outdoor big-screen on the Park Hills campus quadrangle (the waterfall area).
MACFlix continues its annual "Drive-In Nights" on Saturday with a free, widescreen presentation of Steven Spielberg’s 1981 action adventure classic “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” (rated PG) at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free to everyone. MACFlix presents all films in their original, large, widescreen format along with an outstanding sound system.
Dr. Kevin White, sponsor of MACFlix, said the movie was chosen because of its successful attempt at creating a modern version of 1930s and 40s movie serials and the fact that it became 1981’s top-grossing film, as well as one of the highest-grossing films ever made. Nominated for eight Academy Awards in 1982, including Best Picture, it won four, including a Special Achievement Award for Sound Effects Editing.
Indiana Jones (Ford) is pitted against a group of Nazis who are searching for the Ark of the Covenant, which Adolf Hitler believes will make his army invincible. The film co-stars Karen Allen as Indiana's former lover, Marion Ravenwood; Paul Freeman as Indiana's rival, French archaeologist René Belloq; John Rhys-Davies as Indiana's sidekick, Sallah; Ronald Lacey as Gestapo agent Arnold Toht; and Denholm Elliott as Indiana's colleague, Marcus Brody.
White said the movies are digitally re-mastered and presented with an extremely, high-quality projector/sound system in a theater environment. “The films shimmer beautifully on our specially-built widescreen, so the effect is like walking through a time machine and watching the movies in their very first weekend of release,” White said. “They're amazing to watch!”
