Bonne Terre will soon have a new playground at Lakeview Park where a butterfly garden had been.

Bonne Terre Parks Board Member Julie Pratte said the project has been in the works for more than a year.

“When I got on the park board a little over a year ago, it was one of the things I wanted to do,” said Pratte. “We used to have a butterfly garden out by the pond and the new playground will go where it used to be.

“It’s down the walking trail and past the little dock in the water,” Pratte said. “That pavilion doesn’t get used a whole lot, so the parks board was thinking if they put playground equipment there parents would be more apt to utilize that pavilion. They don’t want their kids out by the road when they are halfway around the pond.”

Pratte said they have already ordered this playground equipment and received it. She added it is for ages 2 to 12, because they wanted something that fit all age groups.

“Bruce Pratte’s class at UniTec has volunteered to help put the pieces together for us,” said Pratte. “We were waiting for the right time when some city workers could donate some time to us, along with some of the parks board members.”

Pratte said they had a parks board meeting recently and decided they can’t do anything until spring when the ground thaws.

“It’s ready and we can dig the holes and start putting it together once the weather cooperates with us,” said Pratte. “It should take a couple days to compete it and have it up and going. Once the guys are working on it during the day they will rope it off in the evenings and hopefully people will stay away until it’s finished.”

Pratte said they are really excited about the new playground because they haven’t had anything new in several years and they are hoping it will make the park more family-friendly on that side of the lake so the little ones have somewhere to play.
