Marketing class at FHS helping foundation

The Farmington High School marketing class is helping to raise money for the Farmington Education Foundation. On Nov. 3 the class is hosting a trivia night at the Farmington High School lower cafeteria starting at 6 p.m.

The main project of the class is to help raise awareness about the Farmington Education Foundation. Last school year they sent out letters to former alumni and helped with a page on the Farmington School District website about the Foundation.

Some of the goals of the foundation are to generate financial support for the Farmington R-7 School District by funding programs, equipment and projects that promote and enhance excellence in our schools. The foundation also provides educational scholarships to Farmington students, and promote a spirit of community involvement, enthusiasm and support for the schools.

According to the Farmington Education Foundation website their purpose is to enhance the educational function of the Farmington School District by providing additional funding to finance special and unique projects that would not otherwise be funded.

Instructor Kristi Scott said she posed a question to the class about a way to raise money for the foundation and this was the one everyone seemed to like.

Student Lisa White came up with the idea for the silent auction.

Scott said local businesses who want to donate to the trivia night can contact her or one of the students in the class. Each student is responsible for contacting friends and family members about donations and branched out and called businesses. The students will then go and collect the items.

Student Whitney Johnson said some of the items they have collected include gift cards, a little Caesar’s box with goodies, a St. Paul basket, a donation from Cathy Baker Studios, wine from Twin Oaks Winery, passes from Pallos Golf Course and many other items.

Student Elijah McBride said they have a goal for at least 25-30 teams. They want enough to make it a significant event.

Scott said teams are $10 per person and its 10 people per table. There will be 10 rounds of trivia.

Student Jake Burch said the class has been working to create questions for the 10 categories. They will have questions about marketing, Farmington, food and geography just to name a few. Scott said they want the questions to appeal to all audiences so people from all age groups can attend.

“We created a ballot to see which school had the most attendance. There is a district wide competition and whichever school has the most people attend will win a prize,” said Kylie Wilkins, a student.

Scott said there will be snacks provided, however, everyone attending is welcoming to bring their own. But they want to remind everyone there is no alcohol allowed.

Foundation President Ardie Henson said the work of the marketing class has been a big benefit to the foundation. “Mrs. Scott and the kids have been working hard on the trivia night to make it a success. This is a good teaching experience for the students and it helps them to get more involved,” Henson added.

Scott said she thought trivia would get the students more involved in the project. This project is considered a test grade. Each student has to be there and participate. However, there are a couple who have prior commitments and they will have a makeup assignment.

The goal is to raise $3,000 for the foundation.
