PARK HILLS — The Mineral Area Cardinals rallied late to win the first game of their doubleheader on Sunday against the Crowder College Roughriders 5-4, but in the second game they let it get away to the Roughriders late rally for a 6-3 loss.
In the opener the Cardinals took the initial lead in the third inning with their starter Jeff King holding Crowder scoreless through three. Mineral Area scored three runs only to have the Roughriders go one better with a four spot in the top of the fourth.
King went back to work in the fifth to keep the visitors scoreless for another three frames with the hopes his teammates would bail him out from a possible loss while recording eight strike-outs in the process. The Cardinals came through with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to give King the win, while on defense they played errorless ball.
Mineral Area hitters collected nine hits in the process with Lance Fields hitting three singles, and both Tanner Glore and Clayton Gibbons hitting two. Dylan Mays and Cody Garlngton had one double each.
In game two, both starters battled after they had each yielded a run in the first inning. The score remained tied until the sixth inning when Crowder took the lead for good with a pair of runs off of MAC pitcher Wayde Roth. Wayde only yielded three hits in his six innings on the mound.
With the help of Cardinals errors, Crowder tacked on three more runs in the seventh off of reliever Scott Jones. After having a clean slate in game one, Mineral Area committed six errors in game two.
All three of MAC’s hits went for extra bases. Clayton Gibbons hit a two-run home run in the seventh to make it a three-run game, but the Cardinals had nothing more to add. Lance Fields and Ryan Bradshaw both hit one double in the game.
Mineral Area (22-18) will be at Three Rivers on Tuesday to play a doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
