PARK HILLS — While most baseball fields in the area were unplayable, MAC’s Hal Loughary baseball field was in immaculate condition, and the Mineral Area Cardinals took advantage of the sunshiny afternoon to win two ball games from the visiting Missouri Valley College Vikings J.V. team.

Originally scheduled to play NE Oklahoma, the Cardinals were able to get the Vikings to fill in when NE Oklahoma had to cancel, but it was all Mineral Area as the Cardinals won both games by the 10-run rule in a minimum five innings, 11-1 and 10-0.

In game one, the Vikings were able to put their first three men on base before Cardinal pitcher Scott Jones settled in to retire the next three batters. The Vikings lone run of the doubleheader came in the second inning with a lead-off single by Ryan Anderson. A pair of Mineral Area errors allowed Anderson to harmlessly advance the other three bases.

The Cardinals scored their first run without a hit after lead-off hitter Brad Matson drew a walk, stole a base, advanced on a fly ball and scored on a balk.

Mineral Area powered up in inning two with Dylan McEwin hitting a two-run home run, and Tyler Bunge and Tanner Glore followed with RBI doubles. Back-to-back doubles by Cody Garlington and McEwin in the third inning added another run.

Jones took control of things from the mound for Mineral Area as he gave up only one more single over the last three innings.

The Cardinals finished off the game in style in the fifth inning as McEwin and Austin Harris drew walks to start off the inning and Tyler Bunge drove them both in with a home run over the right field fence. Brad Ridings walked and a single by Dylan Mays drove him in from second for the game-ending run.

The Cardinals pitching was even more stingy in game two. Jeff King faced only 17 batters as the Vikings lead-off hitter Michael Bennett reached on a Cardinals error and King walked the next batter, but for the rest of the way, King masterfully retired the next 15, striking out 10 batters in acquiring a no-hitter on his resume.

The Cardinals started the game offensively with three straight hits to score three runs on a double by Glore and sacrifice flies by Mays and Ryan Bradshaw. Bunge hit an RBI single in the second inning to make the score 4-0.

Danny Define led off the fourth with a solo home run to jump-start a five run rally, including a two run shot by Mays . Pinch hitters Will Young and Chris Ostrowski provided the fifth inning fireworks with Young hitting a lead off single and Ostrowski following with a double. Designated hitter Bradshaw hit a sacrifice fly to score Young for the final run.
