MATTOON, Ill. -- Anthony Virdure scored 22 points and Cris Craig tallied 19 on Friday to lead the Mineral Area men’s basketball team over Kennedy-King 72-62 at the Lake Land Classic.
The Cardinals (4-0) finished a strong 33-of-43 from the line in a contest plagued by constant whistles. A combined 18 fouls were called by the midway point of the second half.
Virdure knocked down 14-of-15 free throws and Craig finished 11-of-12 to protect a second-half lead that reached 61-49 with 7:17 to play.
Frank Williams scored 14 points to pace Kennedy-King, which opened the game with a 9-0 run and reached a maximum advantage of 18-8.
Mineral Area used trapping pressure to erase that deficit by the intermission, and easily won the turnover margin. Briar West added 11 points and gave the Cardinals their first lead just before halftime.
West converted a steal into a transition basket while drawing an intentional foul, then scored off the ensuing inbounds play. The extended possession helped the Cardinals lead 31-28 at the break.
MAC will continue tournament play Saturday against Danville Area.
