VINCENNES, Ind. — The Mineral Area College women’s basketball team parlayed a pivotal defensive stand into another thrilling victory away from home on Friday evening.
After stopping SW Illinois in the closing seconds of regulation, the Lady Cardinals pitched an impressive 11-0 shutout in overtime to prevail 75-64 at the Vincennes Classic.
Sophomore Sonya Milford scored a game-high 19 points, while Hanna Vette contributed 16 points and Kylie Oertel added 11 in the victory.
Mineral Area (7-3) finished an impressive 27-of-32 from the line, and will conclude the 3-day event by challenging the host team today at 3 p.m.
Bri Tye tallied 11 points, five assists and four steals, and pulled MAC even at 64-64 with her lone made field goal of the night. Tye hit a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to defeat Olney Central on Thursday.
Both teams committed 17 turnovers in a contest that featured 16 lead changes. Mineral Area enjoyed a 36-34 edge at halftime.
Stormy Williams and Haylee Althoff scored 13 points each for SW Illinois, which was 9-of-21 from beyond the arc.
