FARMINGTON — “4” was the magic number for the doubleheader played at the Farmington Sports Complex on Thursday between the Mineral Area Lady Cardinals and the St. Louis Lady Archers. Whichever team reached it first, won.

The Lady Cardinals scored their fourth run in their last at-bats to win the first game 4-3, and the Lady Archers did the same in the second game to gain a split by the same 4-3 score.

A bloop single over the second baseman by Allyson Luce to lead off the sixth, and a hot shot off the third baseman’s foot by Emily Hanquist set up the winning score in the first game. Melanie Hager drew a walk and Katie Bevins was hit in the knee by a pitch for the winning RBI.

The Lady Cardinals racked up a 3-0 lead after three innings. Erica Inman hit an RBI ground out off the pitcher’s glove which St. Louis’ shortstop Jennifer Ridenhour scooped up to only have a play at first as Tory Smith crossed the plate.

Hanquist doubled the score with a solo shot in the third inning to break Mineral Area’s home run record of 11 with her 12th home run of the year.

Melanie Hager followed Hanquist’s home run with a shot to the fence for a double, and pinch-runner Trista Walker scored MAC’s third run on a single by Kallie Federhofer. Hanquist nearly drove in MAC’s fourth run in the fourth inning hit a long drive to right center which hopped the fence at its lowest point. Luce, who was on first, had to stop at third on the ground-rule double.

Hannah Ghant kept the Lady Archers’ batters silent as she spread out seven hits over the seven innings pitched. All three of St. Louis’ runs were unearned in the fourth inning. A ground ball which would have ended the inning was booted to load the bases, and lead-off hitter Kelly Bridgmon drove in all three runners with a double in the gap in left-center.

In game two, the Lady Archers muscled up to score all four of their runs on home runs. St. Louis (17-16) took advantage of another infield error by the Lady Cardinals with Jessica Neider following the two-out error with a three-run homer to left-field. Bridgmon added the coveted fourth run with a solo blast in the top of the seventh.

Mineral Area manufactured their first run in the third inning. Luce hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and on a throw to first to try and pick off Hanquist who had reached on a walk, Luce stole third. Hanquist took off on the next pitch to steal second and Luce was able to score on the fake throw to the second baseman.

Hanquist also stole second in the fifth after reaching on a single, and she scored on a single by Katie Bevins.

Tory Smith added Mineral Area’s third run to the scoreboard with a lead-off home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Federhofer took the loss, despite striking out five batters and allowing only five hits. The Lady Archers scored only one earned run, and the Lady Cardinals outhit the visitors 6-5.

Mineral Area (17-24) will host Cottey this afternoon at 2 p.m. for their next doubleheader.
