FARMINGTON — The Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals were able to push their winning streak up to four in hosting the Southeastern Illinois Lady Falcons on Wednesday.
Playing errorless ball and scoring one run in each of their last two at-bats the Lady Cardinals squeezed out a 3-2 win in the first game, and Kallie Federhofer pitched a 6-1 win for MAC in game two.
Hannah Ghant held the Lady Falcons hitters in check for most all of the first game, giving up only seven hits and two walks but she had to wait all seven innings to finally collect the win.
Despite both teams having runners on base in each of their turns at bat in the early innings, it wasn’t until the third inning before the Lady Cardinals scored the first run of the game.
A lead-off single by No. 9 hitter Tristan Branch turned into two bases on a sacrifice bunt by lead-off Allyson Luce. Melanie Hager drove in Branch with a two-base gapper in left-center.
The Lady Falcons answered in the top of the fourth with a lead-off double by Allyson Corry followed by RBI singles from Kaylee Boston and Hannah Cockrum to make the score 2-1.
With two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, Mineral Area was robbed of an extra base hit as center fielder Kasey Glover chased down a fly ball for a snow-cone catch.
Designated hitter Kallie Federhofer led off the sixth with a single, and pinch-runner Megan Smith stole second, advanced to third on a single by pinch-hitter Erica Inman and scored on a single by Tory Smith.
A sacrifice bunt turned into disaster for the Lady Cardinals as Lady Falcons pitcher Taylor Fletcher tossed out the runner at home, and catcher Lacy Gill threw out the batter trying to advance to second for a double play.
Ghant pitched her second 1-2-3 inning in a row in the seventh, helped by a snow-cone catch from shortstop Hager who ran down a bloop fly down the left-field line. Emily Hanquist hit a one-out single to start the Lady Cardinals last-ditch attack. Hanquist advanced to second on a wild pitch and Katie Bevins made good contact to drive her in with a single.
Helped by a lunging snow-cone catch by left-fielder Tristan Branch for the first out of the second game, Federhofer set down the first seven batters she faced to set the tone for game two. Only three Lady Falcons reached second base over the first six innings of play.
The Lady Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning, with back-to-back singles from Hager and Bevins. Hanquist, who had reached on a fielder’s choice was able to score on Hager’s single after a throw to third went all the way to the side fence instead.
Hager, who advanced to second was able to score on Bevins single. The 2-0 score stood until the fifth inning when the Lady Cardinals received three free passes to first, followed by three straight two-out hits.
Both Luce and Bevins were hit by a pitch and Federhofer walked to start the rally. Luce scored on a ground out by Hager, and Bevins and Federhofer both scored on a double by designated hitter Inman, and Inman trotted home for the final run on a double by Haley Stevens.
Mineral Area (10-17) will be back at the Farmington Sports Complex at 2 p.m. this afternoon to host St. Charles in a conference doubleheader.
