NEVADA, Mo. — Courtney Massengale launched four home runs, Miriah Korokis clubbed three of her own, and the Mineral Area softball team barely escaped Cottey College with a doubleheader split.
The Lady Cardinals parked 12 pitches over the fence to establish a single-day team record, including eight in game two alone, and finished a chaotic Saturday afternoon with wins of 11-10 and 13-12.
The opener saw the Lady Cardinals build a 10-3 lead behind sophomore hurler Kallie Federhofer. Cottey would erase that margin, however, scoring five runs off two relievers in the sixth inning.
MAC broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh, and Lauren Stamp threw a scoreless home half for the win.
Korokis netted four RBI after twice going deep. Massengale also drove in four runs while matching Erin Littrell with a home run and double. Sonya Hahn chipped in two singles.
Cottey pounced for five runs in the opening frame, but the Lady Cardinals scored four in the fourth to draw within 9-8. MAC then snapped a 10-10 tie with three in the seventh to prevail.
Massengale homered three times to bring in four runs. Darby Ferguson and Littrell each added three hits including a home run.
Federhofer connected twice for home runs while going 3-for-4, and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the win.
Korokis added her third blast of the day and Sami Jo Horrell notched an RBI double as Mineral Area (9-15) improved to 4-2 in Region 16 play.
