PARK HILLS — The Mineral Area Lady Cardinals had a full night on Thursday as they hosted both SW Illinois college (SWIC) and McKendree College J.V. teams for a doubleheader in volleyball. Because of the dual match, instead of the usual three out of five format the teams played best of three.
Mineral Area won both matches in two games, defeating the McKendree Bearcats 25-17, 25-19 and the SWIC Blue Storm 25-15, 25-20.
The Lady Cardinals utilized a constant, strong attack at the net to keep both opponents on the defensive most of the night. Setter Marija Jovanovic kept the Lady Cardinals hitters loaded with ammunition as she made 31 assists against the SWIC and then added another 23 in the McKendree match.
Hillary Trevino led MAC’s attack against SWIC with nine kills and Katarina Sretenovic was next with six kills. SWIC’s attack was thwarted by Brooke Williams with 16 digs of the Blue Storm’s spikes.

Against McKendree, Jovanic utilized a back set to keep a crossing Meghan Donoghe on target with slashing kills that left the Bearcats either diving to the floor for a dig effort, or smarting from a ball that caromed off of their body. Jovanovic connected for nine kills in the match.
In the first game, Trevino continued her fearsome attack at the net, scoring half of MAC’s first six points with a kill. She added three more before Dohogne took over spiking duties on the right side.
A Sretenovic ace gave Mineral Area a 17-14 lead and after taking advantage of several Bearcat mistakes the Lady Cardinals rode out the final points for the win.
In the second game, Sretenovic served the Lady Cardinals to a 9-3 lead with her last service point hittng only floor for an ace. McKendree battled back to pull to within one point at 14-13 and both teams went into side-out play, by trading serves on every play. Kelsey Jones kept Mineral Area from pulling away in the late going as she pounded the ball for the Bearcats from the left corner.
Jovanovic found new blood to set the ball to as Bailey Layman and Ashley Thompson stepped it to do the outside hitting. Layman made three kills in the team’s 20’s and Thompson sealed the game with a kill for the 25th point.
Mineral Area (16-3) will travel to play Missouri Baptist for their next match.
