VINCENNES, Ind. – The Mineral Area volleyball team faced arguably its toughest test so far this season with resounding success at the Vincennes Invitational on Saturday.
A dominant second set powered a 25-23, 25-9, 25-23 victory over the host school that kept the 17th-ranked Cardinals unbeaten in a battle of top-20 squads.
Cailey Bracken posted a team-high 16 kills, and equaled the 18 digs by libero Shelby Meyer for Mineral Area (14-0). Jane Kickham contributed nine kills plus 10 digs.
Pam Zuluaga made 30 assists, served three aces and added nine digs. Melissa Avendano finished with seven kills, and Ainslee Finch brought up nine digs.
The Lady Cardinals met Wallace State (Ala.) in a national tournament rematch earlier on Saturday, and emerged with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 triumph.
Kickham efficiently knocked down 16 kills in 29 attacks, and Zuluaga compiled 35 assists with 11 digs to lead the way.
Bracken totaled nine kills with 10 digs, and Emily Eaton spiked seven kills while Anica Popadic added six. Meyer made 16 digs and Finch had nine more.
Courtlyn Baber landed 17 kills for Wallace State.
Mineral Area rolled through Friday’s action with victories over Glen Oaks (25-19, 25-11, 25-15) and Lake Land (25-14, 25-15, 25-14).
Bracken tallied 12 kills with 11 digs, and Avendano delivered 11 kills on just 17 attacks against Glen Oaks. Meyer finished with 15 digs and five service aces.
Zuluaga posted 39 assists, 11 digs and four aces. Kickham accounted for seven kills and seven digs, and Raylyn Dodd matched Popadic with five kills each.
Popadic collected four solo blocks as MAC downed Lake Land for the second time this season. Meyer ended with 12 digs to help the defense.
Zuluaga thrived all around with 28 assists, 11 digs and four aces. Kickhham had a team-high 13 kills and Bracken sent down 10 more.
Mineral Area has won 42 of 43 games this season, and will travel to East Central on Wednesday. New national rankings will be released on Tuesday.
