HILLSBORO, Mo. — An atypical loss at Mineral Area two weeks ago sent Jefferson College basketball into a surprising spiral as three subsequent setbacks brought an exit from the national poll.

The Vikings regrouped with authority on Wednesday night by leading the entire way in an 81-55 rematch, repeatedly burning the Lady Cardinals in transition while limiting MAC to six first-half field goals.

Anete Klintsone connected on 5-of-7 shots from 3-point range in scoring a game-high 16 points, and Christina Granville tallied 15 with eight rebounds as five Vikings reached double figures overall.

Hanna Vette netted 15 points and Emily Brumitt added 13 for Mineral Area (12-10), which negated a 14-of-17 effort at the free throw line by shooting 23 percent from the field before halftime.

Klintsone drained back-to-back threes from opposite wings and Granville converted a steal into a 2-on-1 layup during an initial 14-2 run, and the margin would continue to build for the host squad.

Jefferson quickly attacked when pulling down defensive rebounds, yielding easy putbacks for both Ryven Jackson and Angela Johnson as the separation increased to 35-16.

Mineral Area ended the first half with a follow from Sonya Milford and triple by Rita Banaszczak, but could not generate enough momentum on the road for a potential comeback.

Reserve center Kate Alemann chipped in eight points during eight minutes of action for the Lady Cardinals, and was the recipient of a nifty behind-the-back assist from Briannica Tye on a fast break.

Jefferson had already posted its largest advantage of 65-34 before Brumitt and Vette answered with 3-pointers from the left side.

Breanna Shaw added 11 points and Jayme Jackson matched Johnson with 10 each for the Vikings.

Mineral Area, now 2-4 in Region XVI play, will travel to Sedalia on Saturday to battle fifth-ranked State Fair.
