PARK HILLS — Ranked 18th nationally out of 183 Division 1 Junior College basketball teams, the Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals are entertaining the possibility of having their name move even higher in the polls after concluding a 10-game winning streak on Saturday with an 88-74 win over a 13-3 Three Rivers Lady Raiders’ team.
Mineral Area (15-1) has won three games, including No. 3 Iowa Western, since the last polls were listed. The new poll will come out on Wednesday.
The Lady Cardinals were tested for most of the first half by the Lady Raiders with the lead changing 12 times and being tied 10, but a late push headed up by Courtney Fisher gave the Lady Cardinals the lead for good before the half.
Coming in off the bench with the score 40-39, Fisher attacked the back door to score three quick baskets. Janelle Travis just beat the shot clock with a shot which she rebounded and put back in to give the Lady Cardinals their largest lead of nine in the first half. The Lady Cardinals kept the lead at nine at the break with Chelsea Pannier making two free throws after being fouled on a defensive rebound.
The Lady Cardinals pushed out to an early 14-7 lead on threes by Pannier and Courtney Knuckles, but led by a speedy Dennisha Brown at point guard, the Lady Raiders quickly caught up to tie the game at 15-15. Brown scored 15 points in the game, all in the first half.
Travis kept the Lady Cardinals in the back-and-forth battle by tying the score three times, making two free throws each time. Travis, who shoots 97 percent from the line, made six more free throws late in the second half to go 12-12 in the game.
Mineral Area’s zone defense shut down Brown and created problems for the Lady Raiders in the second half. Knuckles clipped her second three midway through the second half to give the Lady Cardinals a 14-point lead which the visitors could not diminish the rest of the way.
Chelsea Roberts lit up the basket for Mineral Area with 15 of her team-high 17 points in the half, and Travis hit from three to also record 17 points for the game.
With Brown not able to penetrate MAC’s zone effectively, the Lady Raiders relied on the rebounding and scoring of Anna Vogt to help the game from becoming a blow-out. Vogt finished with 17 point and 14 rebounds.
Mineral Area was having very little trouble on the boards as Tayla Corrigan led the team with 10 and Ashleigh Bow and Roberts had eight each. Bow and Corrigan both scored 11 points each and Bow also led the team in assists with five.
With Mineral Area usually scoring on each possession down the stretch, the Lady Raiders had little recourse to shrink MAC’s lead as they did not make a three the entire game, going 0-13 from the perimeter.
The Lady Cardinals will host Jefferson College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for their next game.
