PARK HILLS — Shortly after the Mineral Area Lady Cardinals had received news of being ranked 13th in the nation last week, the Moberly Greyhounds dumped them 67-55, but on Saturday, on their own home court, the Lady Cardinals made payback not only with a 59-41 win, but they muzzled the Greyhounds by allowing only 12 points by the visitors in the first 20-minute of play.
Thirteen minutes into the game, the Lady Cardinals held a 16-3 lead with Moberly only scoring three free-throws. Unlike the two teams’ first encounter, this time, the Lady Cardinals would not falter.
Morgan Vetter, the only shining spot for the Greyhounds, made a three-pointer with only six minutes left in the half for Moberly’s first field goal of the game. Vetter was 3-6 on threes for Moberly with the rest of the team going 1-12.
The Lady Cardinals were willing to bide their time on offense using several passes and much of the shot clock on each trip, before striking for a score which resulted in a low-scoring game.
Crashing the offensive boards worked to their favor as well with one trip taking five offensive rebounds before Ashleigh Bow was fouled for a trip to the line. The Lady Cardinals scored 20 points in the game on second chances.
Going to the line worked definitely worked in Mineral Area’s favor as the Lady Cardinals made 15 of their 19 free throws, helped mostly by the nation’s leader Janelle Travis who was 8-8, all in the second half. Travis carries a 98-percent, free-throw average.
Moberly continued to struggle offensively due to MAC’s formidable defense in the first half. The Greyhounds made only three of their 23 attempts for a mere 13 percent from the floor, and Mineral Area took a 29-12 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Lady Cardinals (19-4) continued to pull away to start the second half, reaching their largest lead of 26 points early before Vetter made good on her last two threes at the midway point to lead the Greyhounds in scoring with nine. Moberly was able to decrease the lead to 18 over a four-minute stretch.
Marida Lewis made the Greyhounds only other three-pointer, but it had little effect as Chelsea Pannier immediately answered with one on Mineral Area’s end.
Each time Moberly cut into the 18-point lead, the Lady Cardinals would answer with Chelsea Roberts and Travis both making threes in the second half. Travis was 3-4 from downtown, and with her eight free throws, she concluded a 16-point half to lead all players with 23 points in the game.
Tayla Corrigan and Roberts finished with eight points each, and Roberts and Bow led the Lady Cardinals in rebounding with seven boards apiece.
Mineral Area is now 4-3 in Region 16 play and their next game is on Wednesday at St. Louis in a doubleheader with the men.
