PARK HILLS — The Mineral Area College women’s basketball team overcame a disjointed offensive showing with a strong closing stretch to secure a much-needed Region XVI victory at home Thursday night.

The Lady Cardinals sank 9-of-10 free throws during a decisive 13-2 run covering the final five minutes, and received a game-high 17 points from sophomore Taylor Ignoto to defeat Iowa Western 56-50.

Brittany Lawson finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for Mineral Area (11-9), which was hindered by 22 turnovers. Rita Banaszczak went 6-for-6 at the line to add nine points, while Hana Haden made seven assists.

Iowa Western (13-6) endured its own struggle to score with consistency, shooting 27 percent overall from the field. The Lady Reivers netted just 12 second-chance points despite gathering 21 offensive rebounds.

Mineral Area rallied behind a spinning post move from freshman Chelsea Pannier and transition layup by Ignoto after trailing 48-43. Two free throws from Courtney Knuckles yielded the last of eight lead changes at 51-50.

The visiting Lady Reivers created a midcourt steal and shot-clock violation against MAC in the waning moments, but missed four separate shots with the potential to reduce a three-point deficit.

Lakota Goe scored her 11 points exclusively in the second half, and Sarah Woods tallied 10 in the loss. Iowa Western enjoyed its largest lead of 42-36 after Goe knocked down her third 3-pointer.

The Lady Cardinals held their opponents to two made baskets over the first 11 minutes of action, but needed five minutes to register their initial field goal on Kate Alemann’s putback.

Lawson gave MAC its maximum 11-4 advantage with a baseline jumper, and Banaszczak drained a 3-pointer to make it 14-8. The Lady Cardinals finished just 3-of-16 from long range.

Iowa Western responded from its lethargic start to lead 20-19 at halftime, but was slowed by a 7-of-20 effort from the charity stripe. Lanita Colloway and Taylor Turgeon scored nine points for the Lady Reivers.

Mineral Area improved to 2-2 in the region standings, and will host Moberly on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
