COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — It was inevitable that when the Mineral Area Lady Cardinals and the Iowa Western Lady Reivers met on the Lady Reivers floor for their basketball game Friday night, that one team would suffer its first loss of the season.
It wasn’t until the second half when the Lady Reivers more than doubled their shooting percentage to come from behind for a 81-72 win, that Mineral Area’s early season record would be blemished at 4-1.
The Lady Reivers were 16 of 26 from the floor, improving to 61 percent from a 30 percent first half. Mineral Area held a slim lead at the half, 38-35, but they struggled from the floor in the second half.
The Lady Cardinals could not keep Iowa Western’s 6’0” Abigail Asoro off the boards as the sophomore from Sweden pulled down 16 of the Lady Reivers 49 rebounds. The Lady Cardinals finished with 34 boards as a team. Asoro also led all players in scoring with 24 points.
Kasia Kejdrowska and U’Knique Gaines led the Lady Cardinals in scoring 13 points each, and Alayah Cooper and Riley Reddin were next with 10 apiece. Tayla Corrigan and Ashleigh Bow led Mineral Area in rebounds with eight each.
The Lady Cardinals were superb at the free throw line, making nine of their 11 chances, and they won the turnover battle, committing only 16 while forcing 20 by the home team.
Mineral Area will try to get back on the winning track today when they play Cloud City at 1 p.m. in their second game of the Iowa Western Classic.
