POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. – Roman Young made 5-of-8 shots from 3-point range, and put the Mineral Area men’s basketball team ahead 55-54 with less than six minutes remaining on Saturday.
Tallahassee responded from a prolonged slump with a closing 19-3 run, however, and surged to a 73-58 victory at the Three Rivers Classic.
Quentin Jackson netted 17 points, and Corey Douglas matched Trevor Lewis with 15 apiece for the 13th-ranked Eagles (2-0), who carried a 40-29 halftime lead.
Young scored a game-high 21 and made three assists for the Cardinals (1-1), who steadily erased their 11-point deficit and finished 33 percent from the field.
Bobby Parker finished with 16 points, and Jamie Ahale added 10 more. Mineral Area was on the losing side of a 39-27 rebounding margin.
The Cardinals will play their home opener on Wednesday against SW Illinois.
