FREDERICKTOWN – Central limited familiar foe Potosi to three points in the first quarter, and enjoyed a favorable start Monday as the top seed in the Fredericktown Tournament.
Caitlyn Holmes notched a game-high 18 points and senior classmate Skyler Amonette totaled 16 as the Lady Rebels capped off a 62-42 victory in pool play.
Freshman Sophia Horton sank three shots from 3-point range, and scored 13 for Central (2-0), which continues tournament play against Fredericktown on Thursday.
Holmes collected three field goals during a first quarter that concluded with a 17-3 separation. Avery Norris contributed three steals and a 3-point play to help extend that margin heading into halftime.
The Lady Rebels converted 10-of-18 free throws in the first half, and were ahead 33-15 at intermission after Karissa Belfield sank a perimeter jumper.
Amonette tallied nine points during the third quarter while earning three separate trips to the line, but junior Cameryn Yount answered with four made jumpers in the stanza for Potosi (0-1).
Yount had a team-high 10 points, and Jayleen Like matched Peyton Blair with eight apiece for the Lady Trojans, who will play Fredericktown on Tuesday.
Blair created four steals in the contest.
Ste. Genevieve 43, St. Vincent 34
STE. GENEVIEVE – Avery Reed scored a game-high 18 points while grabbing 15 rebounds, and the Ste. Genevieve girls opened their basketball season by topping St. Vincent 43-34 at the Valle Catholic Tournament.
Mattie Helms added nine points and Maci Reynolds totaled eight points with five assists while Sydney Baumgardaner notched seven points for the Dragons (1-0).
Ste. Genevieve surged in the second quarter to a 23-13 halftime lead, and will face Crystal City on night two of the round-robin event Wednesday.
Jackie Verseman paced St. Vincent with eight points.
Valle Catholic 55, Crystal City 31
STE. GENEVIEVE – Three senior guards reached double figures for Valle Catholic in a 55-31 triumph over Crystal City in tournament action.
Senior guard Sydni Basler tallied 18 points while Taylor Siebert and Kaydi Heil added 11 each for the Lady Warriors (1-0), who will meet St. Vincent on Wednesday.
Maebry Jones and Grace Lay each netted eight points for Crystal City.
North County 54, St. Pius 22
DE SOTO, Mo. – Sophomore Kayleigh Winch posted a massive double-double with 25 points and 20 rebounds as top seed North County drilled St. Pius 54-22 in round one of the Fountain City Classic.
The Lady Raiders (1-1) forced a bushel of turnovers, and increased their edge from 15-10 through one quarter to 32-16 at intermission.
Alyssa Huber totaled eight points and Michaela Mason had seven as North County advanced to face Seckman in the semifinals on Friday.
West County 68, Meadow Heights 27
CALEDONIA – Alyssa Roever connected three times from beyond the arc, and netted 15 points as No. 2 seed West County eased past Meadow Heights 68-27 in the Valley Tournament.
Cheyenne Young contributed 14 points and freshman Dori McRaven added 12 in her varsity debut for the Lady Bulldogs (1-0).
West County led 22-6 through one quarter before establishing a 43-14 advantage by halftime, and will face Valley in the semifinal round on Wednesday.
Valley 61, Kingston 27
CALEDONIA – Tournament host Valley secured its spot in the girls’ semifinal round by rolling past conference rival Kingston 61-27.
Emma Rosener compiled a game-high 18 points for the Lady Vikings, who will match up with West County on Wednesday.
Madison Lucas finished with 17 points and Lexie Black dropped in 15 for Valley (2-0). Kingston (0-2) will meet Meadow Heights in Tuesday’s consolation bracket.
North County 80, De Soto 60
DE SOTO, Mo. – North County created separation from tournament host De Soto in the second quarter, and secured an 80-60 victory in the boys’ first round of the Fountain City Classic.
Hayden Sprenkel scored 22 points, and the Raiders (2-0) gathered 18 offensive rebounds while moving on to face Rockwood Summit in the semifinal round on Friday.
Isiah Poirrier struck for 17 points, and capped a 12-2 run over three minutes that gave North County a 34-22 lead. Hunter Johnson also finished with 17 points.
The Raiders were ahead 44-32 at the break after unofficially shooting 59 percent from the field, and a putback tip by Sprenkel created a 61-40 spread in the third quarter.
Austin West highlighted De Soto (2-1) with 16 points while Trevor Johnson had 12 and Brett Gibbs chipped in 11.
Rockwood Summit 48, Ste. Genevieve 41
DE SOTO, Mo. – Rockwood Summit sank eight consecutive free throws inside the final two minutes to defeat Ste. Genevieve 48-41 in first-round action at the Fountain City Classic.
Connor Kramer poured in 21 points and Ben Coughlin notched 14 more for the Falcons, who erased a 24-17 deficit after shooting just 18 percent in the first half.
Ste. Genevieve (0-1) carried a 32-29 edge into the fourth quarter, but dropped into the consolation bracket to play De Soto on Friday.
Chad Donze scored 12 points to pace the Dragons, including a 3-pointer that kept his team within 40-39 with 1:55 to play before Summit closed on an 8-2 run.
Brandon Drury and Derek Morganthaler had seven points each, and Gabe Greminger chipped in six for Ste. Genevieve.
Lesterville 62, Kingston 48
CALEDONIA – Holden Laughman recorded 24 points for Lesterville in a 62-48 victory against Kingston in first-round action at the Valley Tournament.
The second-seeded Bearcats led 34-27 at halftime, and capitalized on some turnovers by the Cougars to extend the lead. Brendan Meyers added 14 points in the win.
Eli Hongsermeier-Baxter claimed 17 rebounds and nine points for Kingston (0-2). Kielan Reyes tallied 15 points for the Cougars, and Cole Regan contributed 14.
