Playoff runs by the Valle Catholic and Central football teams were reflected on an individual level as coaches recently released their all-state selections for the 2017 season.
Eight Warriors are represented on the list after reaching the Class 1 state championship game, and four Rebels have been honored following a sixth straight Class 3 quarterfinal berth.
Valle Catholic again amassed more than 3,000 receiving yards this fall, and junior wide out Tyler Blum ended with exactly 1,000 on 55 catches.
Senior middle linebacker Brendan Meyer, senior right guard Garrett MacMillan and junior defensive back Ryan Grein are joining Blum on the Class 1 First Team.
Meyer was a force for the Warriors with 134 tackles, and became a two-time First Team performer after landing a spot on the offensive line last season.
Grein finished with 46 tackles, two interceptions and 15 passes defended in the secondary, but also had more than 800 yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver.
MacMillan was integral in pass protection and run blocking for a Valle offense that tallied at least 45 points against eight separate opponents.
Valle Catholic defensive linemen Owen Schweigert and Dalton Kertz landed Second Team recognition along with versatile running back Carter Roth.
Schweigert totaled 12 sacks – including two at the Show-Me Bowl – plus 96 tackles and three fumble recoveries. Kertz provided 55 primary 86 combined stops along the interior.
Roth was shifted around various formations, and led the Warriors with 154 points while compiling 17 rushing touchdowns and eight receiving scores. He rolled up nearly 1,600 yards in total offense.
Third Team quarterback Mason Skaggs threw for 2,905 yards over 12 games, ending with 30 TD passes and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 12 touchdowns.
Central battled significant injuries – even before the season began – and fell one score shy of breaking through to the Class 3 semifinal round in a 12-1 campaign.
Junior Will Hopkins became a breakout star for the Rebels, and registered numbers that made him a worthy selection on either side of the ball.
The MFCA voted Hopkins, who recorded 904 receiving yards and a 23.8 average per catch along with eight touchdowns, as their First Team tight end.
He also totaled 136 tackles as a safety with two interceptions and seven passes broken up for the Rebels, who boasted four all-state selections overall.
Junior guard Tanner Friend has quickly risen to become one of the best Central offensive lineman to compete under 14-year head coach Kory Schweiss.
Friend, a Class 3 Second Team honoree, excelled in short-yardage situations as the Rebels purposely followed his blocks to move the chains against aware defenses.
Senior quarterback Jace Bland earned the nod as Third Team athlete after posting a 23-3 record in two seasons as the Central starter.
Bland completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,259 yards and 20 touchdowns with four interceptions, and averaged 7.5 yards per carry while adding 14 rushing scores.
Senior Third Team linebacker Jake Glenn paced the defense with 142 tackles, including 93 solo and 16 for losses. He also chipped in two sacks and three forced fumbles.
The current Central roster now includes seven all-state players after Ethan Weiss, Triston Campbell and Holden Mayberry were chosen as juniors in 2016.
Potosi entered this season with a total of five returning starters, and relied on strong special teams to flip field position as many players adjusted to greater varsity roles.
Zach Haynes earned Class 3 First Team status for the Trojans after averaging an impressive 43.62 yards on 34 total punts. He also served as the place kicker.
Kohl’s Professional Camps has Haynes ranked 22nd nationally among punters in the 2019 class.
The latest all-state selection from Ste. Genevieve is junior defensive tackle Isaac Boyd. The reigning MAFC White Division Defensive Lineman of the Year made the Second Team.
Boyd recorded three sacks and 40 solo stops while 12 of his 72 tackles occurred behind the line of scrimmage. He added four rushing touchdowns as a power fullback for the Dragons.
North County senior right tackle Brenden McClure is a repeat all-state player in Class 4, landing Third Team recognition this season.
