ST. JAMES, Mo. – Senior Caitlyn Holmes scored 13 points, and the Central girls basketball team tipped off a new season with a 46-31 victory over St. Clair on Saturday.
Skyler Amonette added eight points for the Lady Rebels (1-0), who stretched a halftime lead of 21-17 by outscoring the Bulldogs 25-14 the rest of the way.
Central (1-0) limited St. Clair to three points in the second quarter after trailing 14-13, and converted 13-of-19 free throws in the game.
Callie Thurston was 5-of-5 from the line while matching freshman Sophia Horton with seven points each.
MaCalyn LaCrone scored a team-high 10 points for St. Clair (2-1).
The Lady Rebels will open the Fredericktown Tournament as the top seed Monday when facing Potosi in pool play.
St. James 49, North County 33
ST. JAMES, Mo. – North County was held to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters as host school St. James prevailed 49-33 at the Maries County Bank Shootout.
St. James carried a 20-14 halftime lead that was extended by a 17-7 margin in the third quarter.
Sophomore Kayleigh Winch sank 7-of-9 free throws while pacing the Lady Raiders (0-1) with 17 points in their season debut. Michaela Mason added five points.
North County is the top seed and defending champion for the Fountain City Classic, and will face St. Pius in the opening round on Monday.
