FESTUS, Mo. – The West County girls basketball team turned to its dominant low-post attack during the second half, following an error-filled start against Jefferson on Wednesday.
The Lady Bulldogs committed 17 turnovers during the first half, but entered the break tied at 26-26 Chloe Young dropped in her lone basket on a putback layup with 14 seconds to play.
Their offensive efficiency was enhanced during the third quarter by smarter passing and more frequent scoring to help secure a 65-56 triumph.
Hannah Floyd sank a 10-foot jump shot, and Jenna Courtois converted a steal into a layup for Jefferson – all within the first 30 seconds out of halftime.
West County (7-3) quickly shifted its offensive focus down low, and Cheyenne Young earned a brief 36-34 lead midway through the third quarter on a finish through heavy traffic.
Jefferson (4-5) battled to stay close, and twice squared the score late in the period. Allee Drennen wrapped a pass around her defender to connect with a wide-open Dori McRaven under the basket for a 38-36 advantage.
The Lady Bulldogs trapped opposing ball handlers to force errant passes and maintain a slim 45-42 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Drennen notched a team-high 16 points plus six rebounds for West County, while Cheyenne Young tallied 12 points and nine rebounds. Ivy Meinershagen finished with 11 points, and Jordan Stevens added 10.
Meinershagen started the fourth period by slashing into a lane to finish at the rim, but Hannah Becherer nailed a 3-pointer seconds later on the other end.
Meinershagen drew several fouls on drives, but finished a frustrating 5-of-17 from the line.
Becherer showcased an effective jump shot for Jefferson, and led all players with 19 points. Floyd added 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Becherer evened the score again at 48-48 on her third 3-pointer with 6:10 to play, but Meinershagen and McRaven responded with consecutive layups to regain and keep the lead.
The Lady Bulldogs gained an early edge by relying on Drennen inside, but it was negated by seven turnovers in the first quarter.
Heidi Hearst drained her lone 3-pointer to give the Lady Blue Jays their first lead of 12-10.
West County lost the ball on three of its first four possessions in the second quarter, and fell behind 20-12. However, the Lady Bulldogs made two layups and sank four free throws in the last three minutes leading into the break.
Alyssa Roever exited the game early in the third after dropping hard to the floor on a blocking foul in transition, but eventually returned. She finished with six points to equal McRaven, and claimed six rebounds.
Courtois ended 4-of-10 at the stripe, and recorded eight points for Jefferson.
Sullivan 63, Farmington 33
SULLIVAN, Mo. – Bria Jones drained seven 3-pointers after being held scoreless in the first half, and Sullivan remained unbeaten with a 63-33 home rout of Farmington.
The Lady Eagles (11-0) led by just three early in the third quarter, then erupted for a 28-3 run over the next nine minutes of action.
Jones finished with 23 points, and post player Clare Shetley tallied 13 of her 15 before halftime for Sullivan. Katie Creek chipped in eight points.
Farmington (5-4) was paced by Claire Busse with nine points. Her basket on an entry feed opened the second half and brought the Knights to within 27-24.
Macey Pauls added seven points in defeat. She capped the first quarter with a 3-pointer, and gave the visitors their lone lead at 17-15 with another jumper.
Sullivan opened on a 7-0 run before Farmington countered with six consecutive points.
St. Paul 47, Fulton (St. Albans) 6
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – St. Paul blew out Fulton (St. Albans) 47-6 for seventh place in the FSCB Holiday Classic at the Show Me Center.
Chloe Propst scored a game-high 16 points for the Giants (4-4).
