POTOSI – After watching two previous drives deflect off the fence, Paige Battreal finally sent a softball out of center field during the sixth inning against St. Clair on Monday.
Despite tumbling down between first and second in her excitement to round the bases, the lone Potosi senior was smiling brightly.
Her three-run home run finished an impressive 5-for-5 effort with a double and four RBI to propel the Lady Trojans to their sixth straight win 13-3,
Potosi (9-3) entered the home half of the sixth ahead 9-3, and did not hesitate to stretch its lead. Hannah Jarvis singled to lead off, and Kennedy Coleman later drove her in just before Battreal came to the plate.
Coleman posted three hits and an RBI, while Jarvis singled twice and drove in one. Catie Mosier, Chelsea Charboneau, and Jaci short each tallied hits as the team finished with 13.
St. Clair recorded seven team hits with Trisha Buffer and Madelyn Jones each contributing two. MacAlyn Lacrone, Mikayla Weirich and Andi Ingle added one apiece.
The Lady Trojans took an early 3-0 advantage with the aid of three walks by Lady Bulldogs starter Kate George, who struck out five in a complete game.
Emma Eaton earned the win by giving up two hits and notching two strikeouts through the first two frames.
The lead was extended to 6-0 after the second, as Battreal and Eaton each drove in a run before an error at first allowed Short to score.
Mosier struggled with control as St. Clair scored three runs in the fourth. She walked the lead-off batter, and later hit Courtney Dingley to load the bases with one out.
Jones singled in the first run, and a dropped fly ball in center scored two more to bring the Lady Bulldogs within 6-3.
Potosi responded by quickly loading the bases in the bottom of the fourth, and an RBI single by Jarvis added to the lead.
Sydney Litton worked the final two frames, and gave up singles to the first two batters she faced during the fifth. However, she retired the next three to prevent any scoring, and finished with two strikeouts.
Chelsea Charboneau bunted for a single to lead off the fifth for the Lady Trojans. She later reached third on a double to the fence in center by Battreal, and they both scored on a single by Short to make it 9-3.
Jordayn Mercer held the opposition to just three batters in the third by throwing out Ingle trying to steal third after a Mosier strikeout.
Short recorded the final out in the top of the second with an outstanding diving stop at first on a hard grounder before lunging back to the bag for an unassisted putout batter.
