FHS Varsity Academic Team Places 2nd in Jackson and Poplar Bluff Tournaments
The Fredericktown Varisty Academic team traveled to Poplar Bluff to participate in their annual Academic Tournament. The Varsity team took 2nd place in the tournament. First round competition is a round robin with each team playing three other teams. Fredericktown lost its first game to Notre Dame 315 to 275. It won its second game against Twin Rivers 280 to 220. Finishing off the first round competition with a win over New Madrid 365 to 200, Fredericktown advanced to second round competition. Semifinal action had Fredericktown pitted against 1st seeded Bernie. Trailing 225 to 160 at the end of the third round, Fredeicktown made a strong comeback and finished the round tied 320 to 320. In sudden death overtime Fredericktown pulled ahead with an exciting victory. Heading into the finals Fredericktown was again playing a strong Notre Dame. Notre Dame won the final 295 to 250.
The Fredericktown Junior Varsity Academic team also participated in the Poplar Bluff tournament and up against some stiff competition came home with a 4th place trophy.
The Fredericktown Varisty Academic team competed in the Jackson academic tournament and again played well against strong teams. The Varsity team took 2nd place in the tournament with decisive wins over North County and Perryville. Members of the Fredericktown Varsity academic team competing were Matt Stevens, Adam Robbins, Cody Simpson, Paul Guinn, Joey Hyatt, Florian Spenner, and Amanda Tawfall. Members of the Junior Varisty team competing were Josh Provow, Aspen Carey, Patrick Tilk, Nicole Griffon, Adam Cooper, and Jake Stoffregen.
The teams are preparing for the conference academic games which start on Feb. 11 and culminate in the Conference Academic Tournament on March 22, 2003.
