It was an evening of fancy dresses and black tuxes for students at Farmington High School. The 40th annual Sweetheart Dance was held at the school on Feb. 1 in the cafeteria.
It was also a night of nervous anticipation for twelve young ladies. Following their individual performances in the Sweetheart talent show the preceding Wednesday, twelve young ladies and their escorts made their way across the gym floor and to the stage. This was in anticipation of the coronation of this year’s Sweetheart queen.
De’Etta Harper, daughter of Etta Harper, was crowned queen by retiring queen Chris Glore. Harper was escorted by Kelvin Clemons, son of Ava and Randal Cleaves. She performed the song “Lean on Me” followed by a dance to “I yi yi yi yi” for the talent show.
First runner up was Carolyn Abrams, daughter of Bill and Cathy Giessing. Her escort for the evening was Eric Smith, son of Byron and Marilyn Smith. Abrams performed the song “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” by Andrew Lloyd Webber for her talent.
Taking second runner-up honors was Laurel Guiley, daughter of Dr. Terry and Barbara Guiley. She was escorted by Brandon Marler, son of Keith Marler and Teresa Huhman. She had performed a ballet piece to “Bolero 1830” by James O’Turner.
