Poker Run raised money for Relay for Life

“Everybody could go home with a prize,” says Midge Hawkins as she talks about the Poker Run her team is sponsoring June 21 to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

For the second year, the Sav-A-Lot, Save-A-Life team is sponsoring the event that last year brought in 80 motorcyclists from across Missouri.

“You don’t have to have a motorcycle,” Hawkins explained. “You can drive anything! We’re hoping some trucks will come out and it will be like a truck rally.”

The Poker Run is made up of five stops through 130 miles. At each stop, the driver gets a dot on a card and after the last stop, the driver returns to the start and gets a hand of playing cards. The highest hand wins the game.

The entry fee is $15 per head. The proceeds benefit the St. Francois County Relay for Life scheduled for July 25-26 at Mineral Area College. To sign up for the Poker Run, contact Hawkins at 562-7645 or 760-4557.

Registration for the Run is at 9:30 a.m. on June 21 at Petey Burr’s farm off Highway 47 in Bonne Terre and the last riders will be expected back by 4 p.m. Those who wish to come for the food and fun only will pay $5.

“We have prizes for first, second and third place and we will have lots of attendance prizes awarded,” said Hawkins. “Last year, we had about 200 people.”
