SFCR triumphed by ‘The Wolf’

FARMINGTON — On a night where there was a full moon it was appropriate that “The Wolf” would win his second feature in as many outings at the St. Francois County Raceway. After crossing the finish line and bringing his car up to the front straight to address the crowd, Dave “The Wolf” Wofford let out one of his now famous wolf cries celebrating a win in the Racing Association of Mini Stocks (RAMS) Points Series.

“I just knew this night was going to be mine when I saw that full moon,” laughed Wofford following the race.

Wofford had his hands full all night long as a record-number of RAMS (22) were in the pits. One of the “RAMS Kids” was the vehicle hot on the heels of Wofford as he crossed the finish line. Sixteen-year-old Wes Kintz of Piedmont had his best finish of the season by placing second in the feature with Marty Boyer of Potosi third, Jason Brewington of Fredericktown was fourth with Rick Ruch of Perryville fifth.

They were followed by Rusty Voyles of Hillsboro, Brian Cox of Ste. Genevieve, J.J. “Smurf” Johnson of Patton, Chuck White of Ironton and Shannon Burch of Farmington.

Another one of the big surprises of the night came during the heat races when Greg Nielsen of Farmington shocked everyone by winning his heat in his first-ever RAMS Points Series race.

“That was a lot of fun,” Nielsen said following the race. “I’m going buy that car.”

Nielsen was driving the #1 mini stock owned by Kevin Buckley of Park Hills.

“I never did that well in that car,” laughed Buckley. “He was great.”

Jeff Bullock of Farmington and Wofford were the other two heat race winners.

The night was also unique for the RAMS as they became a part of history for the St. Francois County Raceway as the association (along with the 600cc Multis) was the first to ever use the new smaller track at the raceway.

“The fans loved it,” said SFCR promoter Larry Minkel. “It was some exciting racing and I’m sure the drivers had to really be on their toes the entire time.”

With his win, Wofford has regained the lead in the RAMS Points Series by just three points over Ruch and by four points over Boyer with just four races remaining in the series.
