A show to write home about

PARK HILLS — Mineral Area College is giving junior high and high school students a chance to create and act in their own musical.

A summer theater camp for students in seventh to 12th grade will be held July 28 through Aug. 1 at Mineral Area College. The cost of the camp is $40, which will include one night of lodging at College Park, two meals and fees. For more information, contact Rick Giles at 518-2181.

The summer theater camp is conducted by Rick Giles, a professional actor and the director of the college’s theater department.

Giles said the students will focus on musical theater this year. The students will work all week to create a musical. They will rehearse all day July 31 and then perform the musical for the public Aug. 1.

“I will guide them but I won’t lead them,” Giles said. “I will let them make most of their decisions.”

The group of students will perform the musical for the community Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Mineral Area College television studio, located in the technology building.

“It will be a ton of fun for the public to watch,” he said. They will videotape the show so all of the students will have a videotaped copy of the performance.

Giles said he still has openings for eight to 10 more students.

“It will be a great opportunity for kids to get introduced to musical theater … and put together a show,” Giles said.
