Kimmswick hosts Civil War event

The Civil War event started eight years ago in Kimmswick with just two re-enactors camping out in the city park. The next event had 15, then 55, 125 and now has grown to 250 re-enactors with about 200 camping overnight. The camps are 1863 style and are open to the public.

This year the event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10. At 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday there is a skirmish throughout the streets and ending in the city park.

An 1863 style church service is 9 a.m. Sunday in the Apple Butter pavilion. Every body is welcome to attend this service.

There are four 1863 style sutlers, who sell uniforms, clothing and other items found in the mid 1800s.

Some of the units attending are the: 1st. Missouri Regular USA, 6th Wisconsin USA, 7th Missouri CSA, 8th Missouri CSA, {Turner Brigade} Co. M Artillery USA, Co. G Infantry USA, Co. E Engineers USA, Co. K Artillery, Mo Brigade Medical Service USA, Fosters Mo Light Artillery USA, 9th Sharpshooters CSA, Terrys Texas Rangers CSA, Elliotts Scouts.

There is no charge for the public or re-enactors.

This event has grown to the second largest in the St. Louis area and is the largest in Jefferson County.

Two restaurants, a Tea Parlor and the Emmanuel Lutheran Men’s Club will serve great food. Picnic benches are available in the park.
